GWENDOLYN MAY FULCHER Surrounded by the love of her children and family, Gwen passed away peacefully on Friday, April 2, 2004 at Grace Hospital. Gwen was born January 16, 1930 in Rapid City, MB, the youngest of five children, and was predeceased by her parents, Harry and Jean Fulcher; her brother John Fulcher; and her sister-in-law Lucille Fulcher. Left to cherish her loving memory are her daughter Rae Kirkwood (Kent) of Newmarket ON; son Elliott Dary (Patti) grandchildren, Jessica and Michael Kirkwood and Stacey and Adam Dary; sisters, Dorothy Young of Brandon and Betty Broughton (Clarence) brother Doug Fulcher of Victoria, BC; and sister-in-law Marie Fulcher of Brandon; as well as many nieces and nephews. Gwen left Rapid City for the Big City at age 17 and worked her entire career, partly at the Hudsons Bay, Human Resources, and primarily for the Province of Manitoba, first in Public Works and then in Natural Resources, in both Gimli and Winnipeg. An independent woman, far before it was fashionable to be so, Gwen travelled throughout the world to explore, including trips to Russia, China, Portugal, England, the Middle East, Africa, Central America, and Canada from the East Coast to trail riding by horse in the Rockies. Her love of animals was lifelong, and her devotion and love to her children and grandchildren knew no bounds. Gwen wore her politics on her sleeve, growing up listening to Tommy Douglas, working to elect Ed Schreyer, and continued to work tirelessly for "her party" her entire life. In her retirement Gwen was able to pursue her love of athletics and made many life long friends cross-country skiing, mountain biking, as an active member of the St. James Elderobics, curling at Assiniboine Memorial, golfing with the St. James Seniors and lawn bowling with the St. James Lawn Bowling Club. Ever the organizer, she could always be counted on to drive a group, encourage others to join in, and find a solution to any challenge. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Gwens life, followed by a luncheon, will take place Wednesday, April 7 at 11:00 a.m. at Thomson Funeral Chapel, Winnipeg. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society. The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to her lifelong physician Dr. Oscar Domke, and to the staff at Grace Hospital, especially nurses, Joyce, Sharon and Torie for their excellent care, and to family and friends who provided Gwen with support in her final days. Arrangements entrusted to Thomson Funeral Chapel, 669 Broadway, 783-7211.
