Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryHENRY J. FUNK July 1, 1913 - April 3, 2004 After a lengthy and courageous battle, Dad succumbed peacefully, at home, to illness and time on Saturday morning in his 91st year. Predeceased by his loving wife Margaret Helen in 1997. He is survived by daughters, Barbara (Peter), Christine (Paul) and sons, Dennis (Marilyn), Leslie and Larry; grandchildren, Janet, Margaret, Susan, Barbee, Glynis, Gwendolyn and Gaeleen; great-grandchildren, Teri-Lynn, Tina, Cameron, Emma, Chantel, Anna; and great-grandson Gavin. We are always saddened by the loss of loved ones but at the same time relieved that there will be no more suffering, only peace. Dad was born on July 1, 1913 at Hochstadt in Southern Manitoba and raised in a loving family environment on a farm in Amsterdam, only 3 miles north of his birthplace. He married his school sweetheart "Maggie" on September 25, 1938. A marriage that stood the test of time for 59 years until Moms premature departure. The first seven years of his working career was spent as a school teacher with STOPS in Rosenort (four years), Reichenbach (two years) and Bowsman River (one year). Although many fond memories were gathered during his tenure as a teacher, his nomadic life was unsettling and a career change was in order. He had a passion for woodworking that led to an off season job in Altona, where he helped build the Sunflower Seed Processing Plant during the summer of 1945. This led to full time work with a major construction firm in Winnipeg, the end of his teaching career and ultimately a satisfying career as a General Contractor. After several years of apprenticeship in the Commercial Construction Industry, the formation of his own company, H.J. Funk & Sons Ltd., became a reality in 1962. Dad took great pride in the construction of institutional buildings that would serve the community well, particularly churches, hospitals and schools. Woodworking was not the only passion he enjoyed, religion, family, reading, writing and the cottage at Falcon Lake in the Whiteshell, were very near and dear to his heart. In fact, some of the most satisfying times of his life were spent enjoying the solitude of the cottage life in the company of family and friends. Dad retired from business in 1984, but not from life. His zest for puttering, reading, writing, puzzling and a host of other amusements continued until he was no longer able to engage in these activities because of illness. He is now with his beloved "Maggie" in the hereafter. Dad, you will be missed. In lieu of flowers, donations to Heart & Stroke, 200-6 Donald St., R3L 0K6 and/or Canadian Cancer Society, "Research", 193 Sherbrook St., R3C 9Z9, would be greatly appreciated by the family. Funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 10 at 11:00 a.m. at Braeside Evangelical Church, 1011 Munroe Ave. Viewing will be on Friday, April 9 from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. with the devotional at 7:00 p.m. KLASSEN Funeral Chapel 1897 Henderson - North of McIvor - 338-0331
