GEORGINA AGNES (JERRY) POPE (MACKIE)
Born: Oct 17, 1918
Date of Passing: Apr 07, 2004
Offer Condolences or MemoryGEORGINA AGNES (JERRY) POPE (nee MACKIE) 1918 - 2004 With her beloved family at her side, Jerry Pope passed away on April 7, 2004 at the Concordia Hospital after a short illness. She was predeceased by her beloved husband of nearly 63 years, Ernie, in 2002. She was also predeceased by her parents, George and Mary Mackie; her sister Isabel; infant son Ernest James and an infant grandson. She is survived by her sons, Gerry (Noreen) and Richard (Connie). She is also survived by her grandchildren, Blair (Cathy), Nicole (Graham), Courtney and Melissa; her great-grandchildren, Ashley, Gage, Kristi and Madison; brother Jack Mackie; sister Peggy MacPherson; sister-in-law Cynthia Pope; brother-in-law Gordon Pope; along with her nephews and nieces. Jerry was born on October 17, 1918 in Winnipeg and was proud to make it her home for the next 85 years. She was devoted to her father and was profoundly impacted by the untimely deaths of her mother and sister. She wed Ernie in 1940 and they spent the next 62 years together facing life with devotion and love. Together they raised their family and were always there for us over the years. They were extremely proud of their home in St. James where they lived until 2001. Jerry was a kind and caring person who always had a word of encouragement for anyone who needed it. She always dreamed of being a nurse so that she could take care of others and when life took her down a different path, she found other ways of accomplishing her dreams. Many times Mom would tend to sick friends or neighbours in order to support their families. She volunteered to work with Polio victims at HMS Chippawa. She also volunteered with the Childrens Hospital, the Childrens Hospital Book Market and was an extremely active member of the Lt. Melville Wood Guild. As her family grew, Jerry also found unique ways to participate in their lives. She never missed a high school football game and undertook the onerous task of washing all the uniforms by hand. She volunteered to participate in the Earl Grey cub pack and ended up being the leader of the pack. She loved to paint and helped to paint every house in the family, inside and out, at least twice. She was picked to model in a fashion show/luncheon for the wives of visiting Chiefs of Police from all over Canada, an honour she deeply appreciated. These are just a few of the activities that come to mind when we remember her devotion and love for her family. She actively supported Ernie in his career as he rose in the ranks of the Winnipeg Police Force to become Detective Superintendent. She was his and our biggest supporter and cared deeply for every member of her family. She always worried about all of us and as such an active and dynamic person, found it difficult to cope when the arthritis she battled for nearly 25 years crippled her. Not a day went by since Ernies death that she failed to mention that she missed him. We will miss her but we know that she is reunited with Ernie, the way it should be. Before Dad died, Mom made him promise to walk slowly so that someday she could catch up to him. We know that Dad never left Mom and that they are now walking together forever. The Family would like to thank the doctors and staff at the Concordia Hospital along with the staff at Meadowood Manor for their care and understanding as Jerry fought her last battle. Her strength and dignity will remain with us for the rest of our lives. In accordance with Jerrys wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 17 at 2:00 p.m. at Garry Memorial Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Blvd. Following the service, Jerry will be interred with Ernie. The family will receive friends at a reception immediately following. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jerrys memory to the Arthritis Society, 105-386 Broadway, Winnipeg, MB, R3C 3R6. Mom - a brilliant light has gone out forever in our lives. We will love, remember and miss you forever. Love Richard, Connie, Gerry and Noreen. We love you grandma.
