FREDA SUTHERLAND (BROWN) Peacefully and surrounded by her family, on April 14, 2004, Freda Sutherland, aged 97, passed away at the Betel Home, Selkirk. She will be sadly missed by her son Wayne and daughter-in-law Helen and their children, Kelly (Larry) Lewis of Gonor, MB, Scott (Rosemary) of Moose Jaw, SK, Parker (Brenda) of Selkirk, Paul (Shelley) of East Selkirk and Reed of Calgary; daughter-in-law Marlene of Florida and her children, Spencer of California and Tiffany (Casimir) of Florida; grandchildren, Dane (Carol) Sutherland, Crystal (Kevin) De Souza, Todd (Linda) Sutherland, Ward (Heather) Sutherland, Jillian (James) Mills, all of Calgary, AB. Freda is also survived by sisters-in-law, Dorothy Burzuik, Irene Sutherland, Helen Sutherland and Louise Brown, 17 great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and friends. Mother was predeceased by her parents Arthur and Alice Brown; four sisters and two brothers; first husband John Hector Sutherland in 1961; and Victor James Sutherland in 1984; daughter Phyllis Joanne in 1931; and son Kenneth Linton in 2001. Mother was born in Wapaha, MB (near Elgin) on August 20, 1906, and moved with her family to the homestead in Cadillac, SK. It was the early years on the farm and the hardships of homesteading in southern Saskatchewan that taught her the benefits of hard work, to believe in the Lord, to be thankful for the goodness of life, be mindful of others and a healthy portion of humour for the soul. She was a founding member of the Gordon Howard Senior Centre, life member of the Rebecca Lodge, a member of the Royal Canadian Legion No. 42 and of the Selkirk United Church. A loving wife, mother and grandmother, her door and heart were always open. She enjoyed playing cards, making meals for special occasions, knitting, travelling and visiting with family and friends. Thank you to the staff at the Selkirk General Hospital, Betel Home, Selkirk, caregivers from homecare and doctors for the support they provided during her confinement. A special thanks to Dixie Oliver for all of her kindness shown to Mom. Funeral service will be held on Monday, April 19 at 2:00 p.m. in the Selkirk United Church, 202 McLean Ave., Selkirk, MB, with Judy Limpright officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations to Betel Home, 212 Manchester Ave., Selkirk, MB R1A 0B6, or to the Selkirk United Church, 202 McLean Ave., Selkirk, MB R1A 0T6, greatly appreciated. Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk in care of arrangements.
