IRENE MAUD (COLEMAN) SWAIL June 7, 1903 - April 16, 2004 Irene passed away peacefully, in her 101st year, with family by her side at the Oakview Place Nursing Home on the morning of April 16, 2004. Irene was born in Medina, NY, and after living in Toronto for a few years, moved with her family to Winnipeg in 1912. It was in Winnipeg that Irene met her future husband Watson. Irene and Watson were married in September 1924 and spent over 50 wonderful years together. They divided their later years between Winnipeg and Port Charlotte, FL. Irene was predeceased by her husband in January 1975; her father and mother, Arthur and Maude Coleman; and her brothers, Stanley, Earl and Norman. Irene will be lovingly remembered by her two children, Ethel I. (Olson) Gibbs, Toronto, Gordon E. Swail (Florence), Winnipeg; as well as by her sister Thelma Born, St. Catharines. Also remembering Irene will be her six grandchildren, Glen E. Swail (Betsy), Calgary, Bruce D. Swail (Sue), Barrington, IL, Watson Scott Swail (Pam), Stafford, VA, J. Douglas Olson (Roberta), Calgary, S. Patricia Olson, Winnipeg and Janice Brickey (Stephen), Winnipeg; 12 great-grandchildren, Leif, Erik and Max Olson, Calgary, Alyson Brickey, Winnipeg, Stephanie and Avery Swail, Calgary, Heather, Amy and Katie Swail, Barrington and Watson, Pearse and Luke Swail, Stafford. Irenes favourite sport was golf and she was the first woman to win the Tribune Trophy on two consecutive occasions, 1937 and 1938, Wildewood Club Ladies Champion in 1958 and 1959 and Manitoba Senior Ladies Champion in 1958. Over the years, Irene was a member of Elmhurst Golf Club, Southwood Golf and Country Club, the Wildewood Club, the Port Charlotte Golf Club and the Niakwa Country Club. Gardening, sewing, knitting and her home were other strong loves of Irene. She leaves a legacy of generosity and commitment to her family and she will be deeply missed but forever remembered. We would like to thank all Irenes friends and the staff at the Westhaven Retirement Residence and the staff of Oakview Place for all their loving care and attention. A celebration of Irenes life will be held at Thomson Funeral Chapels, 669 Broadway, on Thursday, April 22 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of choice.
