HELEN CAROLINE WHITE After a long and full life Helen died Monday, April 19, 2004 at the age of 96 years. For 52 years she was married to Herb who died in 1986. Helen was predeceased by her daughter Carol in 2000. Left with loving memories of this gentle, caring woman are her children, Audrey Klausen (Herman), Bruce White (Glee Walker), Diana Shapiro; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Helen was born to Reverend James and Alice Smith in Chater, MB. She was the youngest of five children of whom only Alice Fowler is alive at age 99 in Pennsylvania. Helen graduated from Winnipeg General Hospital School of Nursing in 1930 and nursed in Winnipeg before her marriage. She loved her work. As a long standing member of Westminster United Church Helen served twice as President of UCW. She also belonged to Toastmistress, the Antique Arts Club and the Twenty Club. Helen loved music and could still play the piano in her 90s. For many years Helen gave generous support to friends that were ill or lonely. She brightened their lives with her beautiful smile and sense of humour. The family cottage at Matlock was often filled with relatives and friends. Everyone benefitted from Helens nurturing. Helen loved long walks and long swims. She taught us to treasure living plants and creatures, to enjoy the sun and sky and to live each day with enthusiasm. She will be sorely missed. The family appreciates the kindness and care provided by the staff at West Park Manor where Helen spent the last one and a half years. We are grateful to her companion Karen Moroz who has been so reliable and thoughtful of her needs. A memorial service will be held at Westminster Church Chapel on Friday, April 23 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Westminster United Church, 745 Westminster Ave., Wpg., MB R3G 1A5, or CancerCare 675 McDermot Ave., Wpg., MB R3E 0V9.
