LAWRENCE "LARRY"
Born: May 12, 1919
Date of Passing: May 01, 2004
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryLAWRENCE "LARRY" McCARTHY In quietness and peace on May 1, 2004, at the Grace Hospice, Lawrence McCarthy, aged 84, husband of Ella Marie of Winnipeg passed away. Born May 12, 1919 in Winnipeg, he was the eldest son of the late Daniel Joseph and Margaret Mary (nee Cronin) McCarthy. He attended St. Anns Parochial School and St. Pauls High School. He served in the RCAF from 1941 to 1945. Larry leaves to mourn his wife, Ella Marie; two daughters, Lynne Margaret of Winnipeg and Cathleen Marie of Calgary; three sons, Jerome Lawrence of Vancouver, Gregory Paul and wife Suzanne with granddaughters, Megan and twins Shannon and Tara of Calgary, and Myles Patrick of Hudson Falls, NY, USA; four brothers, Jerry (deceased 1988) (Anna), Dan (Mary), Ed (Gail) of Winnipeg, and Joe of Dorchester, Massachusetts, USA; three sisters, Rosaleen (Mrs. Wm. Brecknell) of Parksville, BC, Sheila Johnson of Winnipeg, and Maureen (Mrs. Peter Hirst) of Coquitlam, BC; as well as many nieces and nephews. Following discharge from the RCAF, he joined Canada Post as a postal clerk and railway mail clerk until retirement in December 1981. Larry received many citations for his generous giving of himself to his church and community. He was a tireless volunteer for such organizations as Meals on Wheels, Rossbrook House, the Red Cross, and the Christian Childrens Fund. He and his wife received a special Papal blessing for their many years of faithful service at St. Anns Church. His deep, quiet faith and his love for God blessed many; his loving concern for others sprang from this faith and love. A gift for dry humour, and the laughter he generated from his outrageous puns, off-the-cuff comments and delighted wordplay offered a lightness that countered his "bleak Irish" perspective. Larry was a private, loving, interior man, a man at home with solitude who welcomed people, a man who loved words and silence, a man faithful and loyal to family, friends and church. He, like his model, Jesus Christ, "went about doing good". A celebration of his life in the Mass of the Resurrection at St. Anns Church, 271 Hampton St., on Wednesday, May 5 at 10:30 a.m. A reception will follow at the church. In lieu of flowers, friends may choose to donate to the Scarboro Foreign Mission Society, 2685 Kingston Road, Scarborough, ON, M1M 9Z9; to Rossbrook House, 685 Ross Ave., Winnipeg, R3A 0M1, or to Grace Hospice, 260 Booth Dr., Winnipeg, R3J 3R5. With sincere thanks to the staffs of Grace General Hospital and Grace Hospice for their caring in these past weeks. Arrangements entrusted to: CHAPEL LAWN FUNERAL HOME CEMETERY AND CREMATORIUM 885-9715
