JOHN (JACK) McLEARY October 19, 1914 - May 2, 2004 Peacefully on May 2, 2004, Jack McLeary passed away with his beloved wife of 63 years Astrid and his family by his side. He was predeceased by his parents, Elizabeth and Henry McLeary and an infant son David. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Astrid; son Bob (Wendy) of Selkirk and grandson Rob of Winnipeg; daughter Val (Dave) Stewart; granddaughter Shelly (Patrick) great-granddaughter Adaria and great-grandson Avery; grandson Micheal all of Winnipeg. Jack will also be lovingly remembered by his sisters-in-law; brothers-in-law and their families in BC. He will be sadly missed and forever loved by his many close relatives and friends. Jack was born in Fort William, ON and attended school at Fort William, Minnedosa and Sandhurst Military College in England. Prior to the Second World War, Dad was involved in trucking in Minnedosa before starting with the CPR working as a trainman and conductor from 1938 - 1978. Joining the 12th Manitoba Dragoons in Minnedosa, Dad served his country as a Lieutenant in the 18th Armoured Car Regiment until he was wounded in V.V. Quapelle, Belgium in 1943. Mom and Dad lived in Minnedosa and St. James retiring to the cottage at Valhalla Beach and winter home in Weslaco, Texas, then to their permanent home in Selkirk. Dad enjoyed gardening, reading, camping, vacations to Vancouver Island, and spending time with family, relatives and friends. Dad was a life member and Sargeant-At-Arms at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 161 - Arborg and was also involved in the Masonic Lodge, achieving 2nd Degree in the Scottish Rite. He was also a member of the Millionaires Club, United Transportation Union and 12th Manitoba Dragoons who assisted in the establishment of a monument in Vimy Ridge Park to honour the memory of all those who served with the Dragoons. Astrid wishes to express a special thank you to Dr. Ryckman, and the doctors, nurses, staff and Ambulance Service at the Selkirk and District General Hospital for their loving care and sincere compassion. The family would also like to thank homecare nurse Elaine McAfee and staff, relatives, friends and Rev. Beth McCutcheon for the special time spent and comforting support provided during Dads illness. Miss Me But Let Me Go When I come to the end of the road And the sun has set for me, I want no rites in the gloom filled room, Why cry for a soul set free? Miss me a little, but not too long, And not with your head bowed low, Remember the love that we once shared, Miss me, but let me go. For this is a journey we must all take And each must go alone, Its part of the Masters plan, A step on the road to home. So when you are lonely and sick at heart Go to the friends we know And bury your sorrows in doing good deeds, Miss me - but let me go. Rest in Peace. Our Dads wishes were to be cremated with a private gathering of the immediate family. Flowers are gratefully declined. As an expression of sympathy, donations in Jacks memory may be made to CancerCare Manitoba, 1160-675 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9. Arrangements entrusted to: CHAPEL LAWN FUNERAL HOME CEMETERY AND CREMATORIUM 885-9715 Family and friends are invited to sign the Book of Condolence at www.chapellawn.mb.ca
