ETHEL (ETTIE) CHORNEY (nee Zipursky) May 24, 1921 - May 5, 2004 When we phoned family and friends to tell them about Etties sudden illness, everyone was shocked. Only a few weeks before, Ettie had been her usual vibrant self. She had attended her sister Idas 90th birthday celebration, and as she usually did at social occasions she "worked the room" connecting with family, catching up on news, hearing stories of joy and sadness. At her funeral service, two of her children, Harold and Pam, and her niece Penny with whom she had a special bond, shared stories and reflections about Ettie. They spoke of her love of life and adventure, her sense of beauty, and her connecting with so many people. Ettie is survived by Joe, her husband of 62 years; her children Paul (Carol), Harold (Susannah), Andrea (Brian), Pam (Richard) and Rhonda (Jayne) her sisters, Ida Migie and Mary Maslove and her brother-in-law Jack Sinder. She had special feelings and close relationships with her grandchildren Sera, Deanna (Katie), Ashleigh (Isaac), Morgan, Joshua, Sam, Jessica and Max and her many nieces and nephews. Family was important to Ettie, and her home was filled with photos of children, grandchildren and family members. Ettie also had a special family of friends and neighbours, women that she had grown up with and those whose friendship she enjoyed through her china painting club, exercise group at the Y, ballet, theatre and film outings. Thanks to Rabbi Rose and pallbearers Paul Zimberg, Murray Bellan, Michael Miller, Brent Sasley, Kirby Fults and Isaac Yule. Thanks also to staff at Seven Oaks Hospital and Health Sciences Centre Intensive Care Units, and to staff of East 3 at Riverview Health Centre where Ettie spent her last few days, and where staff lovingly cared for both her and her family. Shiva will be held on Saturday, May 8 from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at 557 Seven Oaks Avenue, and from Sunday to Tuesday from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at 262 Enniskillen Avenue. The family gratefully declines flowers, and encourages those who loved and remember Ettie to donate to the charity of their choice.
