JOHN WILLIAM MOSQUIN On May 5, 2004 at the Victoria General Hospital, John Mosquin, beloved husband of Anne Hryhor-Mosquin, passed away in his sleep. John was born in Brokenhead, MB on October 14, 1926 where he received his early schooling. After graduating from Beausejour Collegiate, he attended the Normal School on William Avenue in Winnipeg. He began his teaching career in rural Manitoba at Greenridge and Green Bay, and served as principal in St. Andrews and West St. Paul schools. In Winnipeg, he taught at Pembina Crest, Grant Park, J.B. Mitchell and Aberdeen schools. After retiring from teaching, John owned and operated taxi cabs with Duffys for many years and worked with H & R Block during income tax season. He was also a member of the Holy Trinity Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral, the Order of St. Andrew and the Parkinson Society of Manitoba. Growing up on the family farm, John hunted rabbits and grouse, a welcome addition to the winter kitchen. He learned to play the fiddle, the harmonica and was skilled in the games of cribbage and chess in which he patiently mentored others. As an avid birder, his binoculars and bird book were always close at hand. February drives to southern Manitoba to greet the horned larks were a must. During the 70s, 80s and 90s, July picnics at his farm in Brokenhead reunited family for music, food, and games of bocci and horse shoes. During his teaching career, John enjoyed curling and once retired, he still followed the results of the matches in the Brier and the Scotts Tournament. As well, he liked to watch baseball games played by his favourite team, the Yankees. In July, 1995 John and Anne were married. They took up bowling, square dancing and shared a passion for gardening, berry and mushroom picking. John pinched a mean perogy, made delicious noodles and chicken soup from scratch and thoroughly enjoyed Annes cooking. They often travelled to visit friends and family throughout the prairie provinces and enjoyed hosting them in return. In addition to road trips to the British Columbia coastal islands and Ottawa, they also journeyed overseas to Ukraine and Hawaii. As well as his wife Anne, John is survived by his stepdaughter Illonna (William) Bohonos; stepgranddaughters, Janet (Jason) Zaluski, Krista Bohonos; and great-stepgranddaughter Julia Zaluski; his sisters, Mary Molinksi of Winnipeg, Emily (Don) Kyle of St Catherines, ON, Victoria (Alex) Olchowecki of Salt Spring Island, BC; brothers, Ted (Linda) of Lanark, ON, Dan (Stephie) of Brokenhead; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father William in 1974, his mother Nellie in 1984 and his brother Harry in 1991. Prayers will be sung Friday, May 7 at 7:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel 1442 Main St. in Winnipeg. Funeral service will take place Saturday, May 8 at 10:00 a.m. also at Cropo Funeral Chapel. Service to terminate at chapel. In lieu of flowers, if so desired, donations in Johns memory may be made to the Parkinson Society of Manitoba 204 - 825 Sherbrook St., Winnipeg, MB R3A 1R9; the Ukrainian Catholic Metropolitan Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, 1175 Main St., Winnipeg, MB R2W 3S4; or a charity of ones choice.
