DOUGLAS MCKENZIE December 27, 1915 - May 4, 2004 It is with great sadness and sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather. Dad passed away peacefully in hi sleep at his cherished home in Aghaming, MB. Dad was predeceased by his wife Albina in 1964; sons, Joseph in 1948, Paul in 1987; daughters, Elma Mary in 1948 and Lillian in 1997; and a brother Donald Harper in 2002. He leaves to mourn his passing nine children, Anne Dunbar (Ben), Ken (Theresa), Bernard (Beverly), Ron (Eileen), Marian Moneyas (Danny), Cecile Williams (Ivan), Barry (Wanda), Rita McKenzie and Cyril Boyd as well as 27 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren. A special thank you to Bernadette Matthews his home care worker who was a faithful friend and caregiver. Dad was born in 1915 at Grand Rapids, MB. As a youth Dad lived with John and Harriet Harper near Hodgson, MB. While living there he developed his skills to drive a team of horses and to do farmwork. Dad rode the tops of railway cars to Saskatchewan to find employment. He made enough money to buy a ticket back to Winnipeg. Dad worked various jobs such as logging camps, fishing camps, freight barges and most recently as a trapper. Dad loved the traditional way of life in the bush. Dad spent many months living on the trapline with his longtime friend John Raven. Often Dad would remind us about working long hours for 77 cents a day. When Dad left Hodgson he moved to the Hollow Water area. Dad married Albina Moneyas in 1941. They raised a family of 12 while living off the land. Dad built his first home in Aghaming in the 1950s. After Moms passing in 1964 extended family helped raise the children. Dad continued to live the trappers life as much as possible until very recently when his health began to fail. Dad preferred the old ways, living in a log cabin which he built in 1983. He lived a simple life, choosing to live with limited modern luxuries. We will forever cherish the memories that Dad left us. He had a great sense of humour, wittiness and great story telling that we will miss. "We love you Dad". Wake services will be held at Dads log cabin in Aghaming beginning May 6. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 8 at 1:00 p.m. from the Hollow Water Community Centre with Mr. John Zacharias officiating. Services will terminate at the Community Centre with cremation to follow. If friends so desire memorial donations may be made to a charity of ones choice. RUSSELLS of Beausejour, Manitoba are in care of arrangements. Call 1-866-424-6271 toll free or 268-2263
