Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDOUGLAS TAYLOR It is with deep regret that we announce the passing of Douglas, peacefully, of heart failure on Thursday, May 6, 2004 at Grace General Hospital, at the age of 84 years. Blessed to have been his family, Douglas left us all enriched by his values, good sense and constant effort. He leaves to mourn his wife Evelyn; children, Susan, William and Lawrence; brother-in-law Ernest Cruse; sister-in-law Gertrude Hanson; daughter-in-law Sofia; nephews, Patrick, David and James; nieces, Marita, Helen, Janet and Heather; grandson Morgan; as well as numerous relatives and friends whose lives he shared. Douglas is a treasure and lives in our hearts. He was predeceased by his parents, William and Amy; his brother Gordon; brother-in-law Ted; and sisters-in-law, Joan and Janet. Douglas was born September 23, 1919, in St. James, Mb. and was raised and schooled in Manitoba attending Kelvin High School. He did some mining/prospecting before joining the Canadian Army in 1939 bravely serving in the Engineers Core as a dental assistant in Europe. In London he married his wife, Evelyn, October, 1945. Upon returning to Winnipeg in 1945, Douglas worked for the CPR, Anthies Foundry and Domtar Packaging before joining Winnipeg City Hydro, Utilities Department where he worked for 39 years until retiring in 1984. Doug loved his hobbies; stamp collecting, a real interest in antiques (where he was associated with the Winnipeg Antique Club), and salvage and restoration of objects. He loved woodworking and was really and truly a carpenter at heart, who would have loved to have been employed at that trade. Doug was very qualified in all aspects of working with materials, be it machinery, construction and repair, and was indeed the natural handyman in his neighbourhood throughout the years. He helped numerous neighbours and friends with their repairs and projects. "Just call Jim", (his nickname), was a phrase commonly heard, "Hell know about it". Douglas was truly a master of the material world...a true worker...when he died he was at woodworking in Deer Lodge. He loved to travel. Douglas and his wife Evelyn travelled extensively after his retirement to just about every country in the world. They sailed every ocean. Seeing the world greatly enriched their knowledge, cultural awareness and wisdom. Dougs life was not always easy, enduring an economic depression and the Second World War and having to learn the value of the difficulty of sometimes having to take on the role of skeptic. It was not always easy having to say "no", rather than always "yes"...to be "realistic" rather than "idealistic". He was really surprisingly astute, and wise in his ways, knowing exactly how tough and difficult, how deep and complicated life can be. Doug did well, always knowing to exemplify a job well done. On Wednesday, May 12 at 10:30 a.m., Dougs funeral service will be held at St. James Anglican Church, 195 Collegiate Street. Interment will be at Fairmount Cemetery, Fairmount Road, northwest of Minnedosa, an area loved by Doug and Evelyn and all the family.
