Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryINGVAR MARINO GUDMUNDSON March 14, 1918 - May 10, 2004 Suddenly on Monday, May 10, 2004 at the age of 86 years, Ingvar Marino Gudmundson passed away at the St. Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg, MB. He is predeceased by his beloved wife, Paulina Lulu (nee Stefanson) of Gimli, whom he has missed dearly for the past 17 years. He is survived by his son Brian and daughter-in-law Anne and grandsons Aric and Kyle; his son Bruce and daughter-in-law Susan, grandson Stefan and granddaughter Carla; his sister Thorey Jacobson; his brother Sveini and sister-in-law Hilda; his brother-in-law, Stefan Stefanson and many devoted nephews and nieces. Born on March 14, 1918, Ingvar was one of three children born to Siggi and Valla Gudmundson of Ardal in Arborg. He completed grade 11 in the Arborg Collegiate. In 1938 to 1939, he won the provincial title for the Manitoba Athletic Association one and two Mile Races. During the Second World War, he served in the Canadian Armed Forces as a tank instructor at Camp Borden, ON, and then served overseas in London, England and Holland. He married Lulu in 1946. They moved to St. Paul, Minnesota in 1950, where they raised their sons. Ingvar was a machinist with the 3M Company for 30 years. They had a big garden in their Oakdale, Minnesota yard, and Ingvar made several custom fibreglass boats and canoes, for wilderness adventures. Ingvar was always at the ready with a story or two. He hunted moose and deer all of his life, continuing until 2002 at age 84. He loved to fish, taking special pride in his Master Angler fish trophies. A related hobby of his was making molds and pouring lead fishing jigs, which he enjoyed giving away as gifts. As a widower, he moved to Lac du Bonnet in 1992, and joined the Wildlife Association and Curling Club, playing in the Old Timers and annual RCMP curling bonspiels. He volunteered his time to machine custom airplane parts, used in the Western Canadian Aviation Museum. The Vickers Vedette flying boat and Fairchild Super-71 airplane were refurbished with some of his handiwork. Ingvar made many friends in the Lac du Bonnet area during the past 12 years of retirement, as he lived independently in his own home with his beagles, Champ and then Patrick. Ingvar was proud of his Icelandic heritage, and was able to visit Iceland five times between 1966 and 1998. Using his own fishing jigs, he was especially happy to catch brook trout in rivers throughout Iceland. He spoke the language fluently, and corresponded with cousins in Iceland annually. A memorial service will be held on Monday, May 17 at 2:00 p.m. at the Unitarian Church, 603 Wellington Cres. (south of the Misericordia Hospital), Winnipeg. Rev. Patricia Wotton will officiate. A reception will follow. Interment of the urn will take place at a later date at the Gimli Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Cancer Society or other charity.
