LARRY MATTHEWS March 2, 1950 - May 22, 2004 Peacefully, at Palliative Care - St. Boniface Hospital, after a brief but courageous battle with cancer, with family and friends by his side. Larry is survived by his wife Barb, his daughter Carolyn and son Sean, brother Lorne (Bev), niece Mykaela (Earl) and son Liam; in-laws, Ron and Pat Huff, and numerous cousins. He was predeceased by his mother and father. Larry spent many years as a production planner at Burroughs, before moving to E.H. Price Ltd., and more recently (since 1995) to New Flyer Industries. He had a gift of striking up new friendships just about everywhere he went, and genuinely enjoyed meeting people. When told that he likely would not be able to work again after beginning cancer treatments, he promptly phoned the travel agent and arranged for a family trip to Disneyworld. Support from friends and co-workers was overwhelming. He could repair virtually anything, and if it couldnt be fixed, it could be redesigned or modified so it would work. He often could be found down the block, visiting with neighbours, and invariably working on some problem he was trying to fix. Once neighbours knew of his illness, they cleared snow, and helped with tasks he could no longer do. Summer holidays and most weekends in the summer were spent at Falcon Lake seasonal campground, and before this, at Brereton Lake, where he enjoyed family camping and boating. The boat he really wanted, new waterskis, and a giant triple tube made last summer, in his words "the best summer ever". The family would like to thank the Oncology department staff, the staff from the Kids Can Cope program, and Drs. Wong, Alweny and Daeninck for their continued support, as well as Dennis St. Laurent and the Palliative Care nurses both at home and in the Palliative Care ward at St. Boniface General Hospital. Donations can be made to CancerCare Manitoba or Hospice and Palliative Care Manitoba. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held on Friday, May 28 at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of Voyage Funeral Home 220 Hespeler Ave. VOYAGE FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATORIUM 220 HESPELER AVE @ HENDERSON HWY 668-3151
