DAVID RALPH DYCK It is with sadness that we announce the passing of David Ralph Dyck, who passed away at age 71 with his family by his side. He was the cherished husband of Roberta (MacNair) and beloved father of James, Patricia and Michael and his wife, June Harman. He is fondly remembered by his brothers, Harold (Kathleen), Ed (Dorothy), Victor (Caryll), John (Florence), Walter (Margaret) and their families; and his Aunt, Lydia Enns, of Winkler. He is also fondly remembered by Bobbys siblings: Jim and Neil MacNair of Graysville, Man., Isabel Rutter and Elsie Coates of Carman, and brother-in-law Keith Braden of Portage la Prairie; and their families. David was born May 8, 1933 on a farm at Burwalde, MB. to John and Helena Dyck (nee Enns). At the age of 16 he was baptized and joined the Winkler Mennonite Brethren Church. He graduated from high school in Winkler and received his Bachelor of Science (1956) and Bachelor of Education (1959) from the University of Manitoba. He obtained his Ph.D. in History of Science from the University of Wisconsin in 1967. He taught at the University of Winnipeg for 30 years, and also served in the Deans office and as Assistant to former university President Dr. Harry Duckworth. He retired from the university in 1996; in 1998 he was honoured with the title of Fellow of United College in recognition of his service to the institution. Following retirement, he served as Dean of Concord College, and assisted in the creation of Canadian Mennonite University. He also spent 2001 teaching at Lithuania Christian College. David was a faithful member of the River East Mennonite Brethren Church, where he taught Sunday school, served as moderator and sang in the choir. He also served the Manitoba Mennonite Brethren Conference on various committees. David was someone who always tried his best at whatever job he undertook, especially this last, difficult one. His family thanks everyone who provided support during this time: River East Mennonite Brethren Church; the wonderful staff at St. Boniface Hospital Cancer Care; family physician Dr. James Krahn; and the palliative care nurses and home care. Viewing and sharing of memories will be on Tuesday, June 1, 2004, 7:00 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Klassen Funeral Chapel. Internment will take place Wednesday, June 2, 10:30 a.m. at Kildonan Presbyterian Cemetery, 2373 Main St., and will be followed by a service at 11:30 a.m. at the River East Mennonite Brethren Church, 755 McLeod Ave. A volunteer choir will meet at the church at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to the University of Winnipegs History Department Scholarship Fund would be appreciated.
