Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryLAWRENCE (LAURIE) METZA Lawrence (Laurie) Metza was born in Sioux Lookout, on December 26, 1943 and passed away May 30, 2004. Laurie received his elementary schooling in Hudson before going on to his secondary studies at Queen Elizabeth District High School in Sioux Lookout. Laurie chose to further pursue his education as a student at the University of Manitoba where he was awarded his Bachelor of Science degree followed by his teaching certificate from Guelph University. During this time, Laurie became a certified Life Guard and was awarded the Bronze Medallion by the Royal Life Saving Society. He also achieved certification under the Skin and Scuba Diving Association and a black belt under the Midwest Karate Association of Canada. Laurie also furthered his development through completing woodworking and physical and health education courses at the University of Toronto. Laurie began teaching in 1967 in Rainy River. Through the years, Laurie taught in Ottawa, Fort Frances, and Sioux Lookout where he retired in 2000. Many students will have fond memories of his math and woodworking classes. His love of woodworking led him to carry his skills outside of the classroom. Evidence of his craftsmanship is reflected in the home he built and the furniture he lovingly created for his family. After his retirement teaching he pursued his love of woodworking by operating his own business; "Lauries Woodworks". Along with his passion for woodworking, Laurie was a talented artist and a skilled landscaper and gardener. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and canoeing. Laurie was an avid runner and cyclist; he enjoyed snowshoing and cross country skiing during the winter season. Throughout his busy retirement he managed to find the time to build his own cedar strip canoe. His greatest joy was sharing his passion for woodworking, nature and fitness with his family and friends. Laurie is survived by his wife Gail; and sons, Michael and David of Sioux Lookout, ON; his brothers, Len of Thunder Bay, ON, Don of Hudson, ON, Rob of Whistler and Ron of Vernon, BC; and sisters, Jean of Parksville, BC and Linda of St. Albert, AB. He was predeceased by his parents, Anne and Nick. Laurie will be sadly missed by all those whose lives he touched. If friends so desire, donations may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society through the Sioux Lookout Funeral Home, Box 1449, Sioux Lookout, ON P8T 1B9.

I grew up in Rainy River. Laurie was dating my older sister Marina. Laurie taught me and my younger brothers how to swim, canoe, tent, camp, and cross country ski. Laurie also built the cupboards in our kitchen and bathroom. He helped us build an amazing sewing room with a huge cutting table and stations for two added sewing machines. We enjoyed this room every day. In 1976 Laurie and Marina's relationship dissolved and our Laurie was gone. A very sad moment in our lives. I didn't know what happened because I was only a young teenager. Seeing that Laurie passed away in 2004 was hard. This is very sad news. Our family met Robbie and Ronnie, but I didn't know his entire family. Please accept my condolences. I am now 55 years old and my heart is heavy with saddness, Laurie was an important part of my life. - Posted by: Marie Morden (Friend of Laurie) on: Dec 10, 2020
