EMILY OLESON Maria Helga Emilia Oleson passed away peacefully on June 3, 2004 at the Betel Nursing Home in Gimli MB at the age of 91. She was predeceased by her husband of 65 years Kari; her first husband Tryggvi and her sister Margaret. She is survived by her children, Tryggvine Emily (James), Kristjan (JoAnn), Maurice, Dennis (Nukte), Brian (Joanne), Fred; and by brother Eirikur, Marjorie Oleson; grandchildren, (Eric, Wendy, Colin, Heather, Trevor, Krystal, Roland, Elliott, Caitlin, Erin, Laura, Mark, Kristjanna, Kody) great-grandchildren, (Michael, Tiffany, Kristen, Heather, Jesse) nieces and nephews. Mom was born on October 17, 1912 at Hnausa to Icelandic parents, Sigurbjorn and Maria Doll. They operated a lodging place for northern travellers and here she spent a happy childhood. They moved to a homestead in Progress, then to Riverton. She was fond of school and later passed on this enthusiasm for learning to her children. She was fluent in English and Icelandic and loved writing letters in both languages. In her youth she travelled Lake Winnipeg with her family. She married Tryggvi Oleson and was widowed very early in life. She married Kari Oleson in 1937 who became a fisherman and they made their home in Riverton where their six children were raised and educated. Her passion was her family. Emily was an active member of the Riverton Lutheran ladies aid. Visitors were always welcome and looked forward to her tea cup reading and superb vinaterta. Emily and Kari moved to Winnipeg in 1967 and on to Gimli in 1992. For the past decade she suffered health problems and resided in the Betel Nursing Home where Kari and family spent long and happy times visiting her. In recent years as Moms health weakened she was still able to enjoy many happy moments: little Kody, Fred and Brians singing, caring letters from Maurice in Newfoundland, Betel Happy Hour, vinaterta, coffee with Baldi and Isabel Baldwinson, and visits by family. A special, warm relationship existed between Emily and Kari and the staff at Betel. The family is highly appreciative of the loving and attentive care Mom received there. The funeral service will be held on Thursday, June 10 at 11:00 a.m. at the Lutheran Church, 52 Third Ave. Gimli, MB with Pastor George Johnson officiating. In lieu of flowers a donation to the Betel Home Foundation, POB 10, Gimli would be appreciated. NEIL BARDAL INC. 949-2200
