DOREEN LEA (nee MOWAT) Suddenly on Tuesday, June 8, 2004, Doreen Lea of Matheson Island, MB, aged 69 years, passed away with her family by her side. Born October 4, 1934 at Selkirk. Doreen married Roland Lea of Pine Dock in 1953. They first settled in Little Point and then later moved to Matheson Island to raise their five children. Doreens early years of employment, in addition to raising her children, included working on the S.S. Keenora, trapping, commercial fishing, community supervising, cooking for outpost camps in northern Manitoba and N.W.T. She enjoyed the company of her family and friends. She always had a cup of tea and her famous oatmeal cookies and dainties ready whenever visitors dropped by. She spent her free time baking, making crafts, knitting and crocheting. She loved to hear the fish stories told by Roland, her children and others. She enjoyed her time alone staying at her camp at nearby Black Fox Island. She decided to stay away from there, when the bears took over the camp. She was very outspoken and gave good advice or a good laugh when she did. She enjoyed assisting Roland in gardening, planting flowers and feeding the birds and squirrels (she disliked black birds). Doreen was predeceased by her parents Katie and Arthur Mowat; great-granddaughter Colette Ladouceur; brothers, Peter, Allan, Wallace, William, Arthur, Ivan, Percy; sisters, Priscilla, Esther and Nellie; sisters-in-law, Nora, Polly-Ann and Ruby; brothers-in-law, Victor and Russell. She will also be remembered by son-in-law Don Ladouceur; sister-in-law Allie Mowat; brothers, Harvey (Dorothy) and Tom; sister-in-law and special friend Laura Mowat; special friends, Eileen Johnson and Millie Bruce and special nieces, Cathy Cook, Janet and Mandy Bennett, Judy Eastman, JoAnne Flett, Wendy Monkman, Connie Smith and Edie Carlson, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and endless number of friends. Tea grannie will be forever remembered and missed by the youngest great-grandsons, along with everyone else. Prayers will be held on Friday, June 11 at 6:30 p.m. in the Gilbart Funeral Chapel, Selkirk. Cremation will follow Friday nights service and a memorial service will be held at Matheson Island Community Hall on Saturday, June 12 at 3:00 p.m. Neill Von Gunten will be officiating the prayers and services.
