MICHAEL MEDOCK September 29,1925 - June 9, 2004 Michael Medock, loving husband of Anne and gentle father of Maryann, Val, Terry and Mark, passed on to his Heavenly Father on Wednesday, June 9, 2004. He is survived by his devoted wife Anne and his children, Maryann (Mel Metzger), Val (Ted Monk), Terry (Sharon Tateishi), Mark (Sue) and his grandchildren Lorelei, James, Melanie, Jordan, Tyson, Michael, Maggie; and his siblings John (Marci), Stephanie (John) and Isabel. Mike was born in the Zbruch District of Komarno on September 29, 1925. He grew up in the Interlake, the sixth of seven children of Peter and Jessie Medock. He was predeceased by an infant daughter, his parents and his siblings Ann, Mary and Nick. As a youngster Mike loved the outdoors, spending much of his time working on the farm, trapping, hunting and helping to support the family. Because he was needed on the farm he was not able to attend school regularly, yet still completed grade 8. Throughout his life, Mike was involved in various areas of work. As a young man he maintained the family farm in the Dennis Lake area near Inwood, was a hired farm hand in Balmoral hoeing potatoes and milking cows, working as a cook in a bush camp and as a bell hop at the Royal Alex and St. Regis Hotels. Mike married Anne in 1950. They moved to Teulon in 1952, where Mike initially worked putting in lines with Manitoba Telephone System, as a carpenters helper installing flooring, then as a taxi driver. Mike and Anne purchased Teulon Transfer in 1953 and ran the business together until it was sold in 1963. By 1964 Mike was back in business for himself when he established Selkirk Tire Limited - a business that continues to thrive in its 40th year. Mike was selected as one of the first Goodyear Select Dealers in Manitoba. He leaves a business legacy of having started the oldest independently owned Goodyear store in all of Manitoba to this very day. Mike was always active in the community of Selkirk. He sat on the Town Planning Board for 9 years, was a past president for the Selkirk Chamber of Commerce, a 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus, a charter member of the Teulon Golf and Country Club, and a member of the Notre Dame Church Choir. As a man, Mike was a gentle soul with an unassuming manner. He was a kind person, liked by all. Mike loved telling his children and grandchildren stories about the adventures of his early years. We all smile when we recall the renditions of his earliest entrepreneurial attempt to buy a clucking hen, the purchase of his first car and his experiences as a bell hop at the Royal Alex Hotel. He loved hunting, fishing, berry picking and mushroom picking. Mike was eternally youthful, refusing to acknowledge that he was to old for anything, including waterskiing well into his 60s. Those who knew Mike know how much he loved too snag a great deal at the auctions and then let everyone know about it later! Always a gentleman, we will miss his tender heart and warm nature. Prayers will be said on Sunday, June 13 at 7:00 p.m. in the Gilbart Funeral Chapel, Selkirk. Funeral mass will be held on Monday, June 14 at 11:00 am at the Notre Dame Roman Catholic Church in Selkirk, Manitoba. Interment will follow in the Parish Cemetery. Active pallbearers are Gerald Kinast, Bruce Kowalchuk, Gerry Hogue, Wayne Koche, Joe Smederovac, Robert Grant. Honorary Pallbearers are Eric Davidson, Martin Carrico, Walter Budy, Lorne Johanson, Stan Bonkowski, Joe Bosak. The family would like to thank the Medicine Ward nursing staff and Dr. Fuchs of the Selkirk & District General Hospital. You were supportive in so many ways. Thank you. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make a donation to the Palliative Care Program at the Selkirk & District General Hospital. Gilbart Funeral Home Ltd., Selkirk, Manitoba, in care of arrangements.
