VICTOR GISLI GILLIS Victor Gisli Gillis of Brandon passed away at the Brandon Regional Health Centre on Saturday, June 12, 2004. Victor was born on December 12, 1916 at Kristnes, SK, the son of Hans "Jim" and Stefania Gillis, the sixth child in a family of eleven. He is survived by brothers and sisters, Anna Evans, Sveinn, Johann (Thelma), and Lillian Gullet and predeceased by Margaret, Franklin, Jonas, Kristin Eyolfson, Halldor and Sadie Hogue. In 1928 the family moved to Dauphin where Victor finished his schooling. His mother died four years later. Victor and his brothers found employment where they could eventually at fishing and farming at Lake Manitoba. Here they felt at home and were treated well. Victor did a brief stint at mining at Bisset and then he joined the Navy in 1942. He served on the Mulgrave, a minesweeper, making triangle runs from St. Johns, Boston and New York. Later as a leading seaman he served with distinction on the Nabob, a naval aircraft carrier which was torpedoed off the coast of Iceland. After the war he chose to return to the Lake Manitoba Narrows area. In 1947 he married Solrune Johnson, bought a cattle ranch and again took up farming and commercial fishing. Surviving are his wife Solrune; and three children, Grant (Linda), Allan (Maxine) and Signy (Terry) Sizer. There are six grandchildren, Cher, Carmen, Molly, Ottlie, Maggie and Thomas; and one great-grandchild Austin Aymont. In 1966 Victor and family moved to Brandon. Victor worked for the Brandon School Division as a stationary engineer for fifteen years. Here they had many happy years. The ceremony to celebrate Victors life will be held at Memories Chapel, 300-18th Street North, Brandon on Thursday, June 17 at 1:00 p.m. Vivian Drake will officiate. Flowers are gratefully declined.
