EDWARD JAMES SHAW Ted passed away peacefully at Seven Oaks General Hospital on Saturday, June 12, 2004 after a lengthy illness. Born in Brantford, Ontario on April 28, 1921, Ted was predeceased by his father, James Maitland Shaw; his mother, Bertha (nee Kennedy) stepmother, Helen; and his cousin, Chris Hoggard, who was like a sister to him. Ted is survived by his loving wife, Virginia (nee George) son Jim (Susan) daughter Sally Dick (Don) and sister-in-law Mercedes Steeds (Ken). He will also be sadly missed by his grandchildren Jamie and Jennifer Shaw, and Paul and Andrew Dick, along with several step-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. First and foremost, Ted was a devoted family man. He and Virginia enjoyed a loving relationship based on mutual respect for almost 55 years. Above all, Ted wanted his loved ones to be happy. He always had helpful tips and suggestions to make life easier. He put family interests above his own and was a strong guiding hand for all of us. His grandchildren were a constant source of joy for Ted. He loved to hear about their achievements and aspirations. They, in turn, enjoyed listening to him relate stories about his interesting life. In the business realm, Ted had a long and successful career in retail. He worked for the Metropolitan Stores of Canada for 48 years, rising to the position of superintendent. He mastered every aspect of the business and achieved record sales year after year when he managed the store at Portage and Carleton. Ted served in the Royal Canadian Navy for four years during the Second World War. He spent most of his time on a Corvette escorting convoys across the North Atlantic. When reminiscing about the war, Ted downplayed the perilous situations he frequently experienced, preferring to share with family and friends many humourous anecdotes about the lighter side of life in the Navy. In many respects, Ted was a multi-talented individual. He could draft detailed blueprints and had quite a flair for sketching. He also had a remarkable talent for woodworking and a knack for fixing things. Ted was a very sociable person with a terrific sense of humour. He lived a life full of faith and optimism. He was a good man. Those who knew him well will cherish his memory. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held on Friday, June 18, at St. James Presbyterian Church, 1476 Portage Ave., commencing at 1:00 p.m., with Rev. Beth McCutcheon officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Teds memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba. The family wishes to extend its deepest gratitude to Dr. Rabson, Dr. Bland and the team of caregivers at Seven Oaks General Hospital for their exceptional care, compassion and support.
