GERALD GENE NAVITKA It is with great sadness we announce Gerrys passing, after a long courageous battle, on his 50th birthday, June 15, 2004. Left to cherish his memory are wife Debbie; son Landon; daughter Julie; parents Joan and Eugene Navitka; brothers, Tim (Kim) Navitka, Kris (Monique) Navitka, all of Winnipeg and sisters, Barb Niemar of Edmonton and Arleigh (Geoff) Gilbert of Calgary; also in-laws, Raymond and Margaret Hersley; brothers-in-law, Richard Hersley of Vancouver, Lloyd (Tina) Hersley of Brandon, Doug (Linda) Hersley of Elma. Gerry will be dearly missed by 10 nieces and eight nephews including special niece and god daughter Josee and loving pet Oreo. Predeceased by grandparents, Stefan and Anna Nawytka, William and Elsie Thorgeirson; cousin Laura Hebert and longtime companion Butch. Gerry grew up in Vermette (since called South St. Vital) and attended school at Vermette, Lavalee, Norberry, Dakota Collegiate and the University of Manitoba. Presently employed with the City of Winnipeg Corporate Services, Gerry also worked with CNR for 22 years. Gerry loved the outdoors, nature, travelling across Canada and taking care of his family. He especially enjoyed many years with family and friends at his parents cabin on Black Sturgeon Lake. For over 20 years Gerry coached hockey in St. Vital from Minor Bantam to Junior and was friend and mentor to many young men and women. Special thanks to Dr. F. Salem, caregivers at St. Boniface, Victoria, Health Sciences and Riverview Hospitals. Very special thanks to Palliative Care nurse Myrna Bownlee, IV nurse Carol Nevin, Lorna and Isabella from Manitoba Home Care. Flowers are greatly declined. Donations may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care Manitoba or to a charity of ones choice. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service to honour Gerrys memory will be held on Saturday, June 19 at 10:00 a.m. at Green Acres Funeral Chapel, Hwy. #1 E. at Navin Road. Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • Sorry but I only learned of Gerry's passing after retiring and trying to follow up with some of my co-workers. I worked with Gerry at CN on Pembina Highway. He was a very helpful and fun colleague ... he worked mostly midnight shifts during which we often had the chance to reflect on the quirks and challenges of life. I am saddened to read that he left us so very early - far too early. Please accept my belated condolences and my gratitude for the friendship of a very good person. - Posted by: Andrew Koczerzuk (co-worker) on: Jul 24, 2022
