MAJOR HERROLD ASHLEY CAMERON After a long illness, Ashley died at Victoria General Hospital at noon on Saturday, June 12, 2004. Ashley was born in Pembroke, Ontario on July 5, 1919. He grew up in Ottawa and entered Royal Military College in Kingston, ON in 1937. With the outbreak of the Second World War, he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Engineers and was posted to Camp Petawawa. He met his future wife, Janet Hope, in nearby Pembroke and they married shortly before he was sent overseas in 1941. After the war he returned to Canada and he and Janet lived in Truro, Nova Scotia and later in Ottawa. A daughter, Janet Ian, was born in 1946 and a son, Herrold David Malcolm in 1951. For several years, Ashley served on the Inspectorate of Quarter Master General Services team, travelling throughout Canada. He continued to serve with the Engineers until 1965, with postings to Regina, Quebec City and Edmonton. After leaving the army, he accepted a position with the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg. When he retired in 1986, he and Janet moved to Victoria where they enjoyed their pursuits of petroglyph research and photography for many years. Ashley suffered a stroke in 1995 and had been diagnosed with diabetes about the time he retired. He was able to live at home for several more years but eventually, had to enter a series of nursing homes as his health declined. He has been a patient at Broadmead Lodge for the past several years and his family would particularly like to thank the staff there for their care. Ashley is survived by his wife, Janet and his son, Malcolm and was predeceased by his daughter, Janet Ian in 1967. A memorial service will be held at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, 680 Courtney Street, Victoria on Friday, June 18 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to make donations to the Canadian Diabetes Association.
