WINNIFRED MAE EARL "Wynne" passed away peacefully on June 13, 2004 at Haro Park Centre in Vancouver, BC. Wynne was born December 2, 1922 in Yorkton SK, and moved with the family to Winnipeg in the 1920s, where she attended school and graduated from Daniel McIntyre Collegiate, and later Success Business College. After working in Winnipeg for a few years, she joined the Womens Royal Canadian Naval Service in January 1943 as a Wren Telegraphist in Ottawa. She returned to Winnipeg after her naval discharge in January 1946, and soon moved to Vancouver, where she met and married her husband, Don Hitchen in 1947. The couple was transferred to Oregon where they lived for several years. They divorced in 1955, and Wynne returned to Vancouver, where she made her home for the rest of her life, for many years living near Stanley Park and her cherished friends. After retiring in 1988, Wynne enjoyed travelling abroad and to the United States to rekindle friendships from her earlier Oregon residence. She was a voracious reader and enjoyed keeping abreast of local and international affairs. In 2002, Wynne moved from her apartment to Haro Park Centre where she quickly made new friends and won the hearts of the staff. Wynne was predeceased by her mother Georgina Dargie and father Allan Earl, and sisters, Marcia Stuart and Margery Piggott of Winnipeg. She is survived by sisters, Mary Jessiman of Calgary and Betty OMalley of Winnipeg, and nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews, in Calgary, Winnipeg and Vancouver. We will all miss this engaging and independent spirit who always had time to help a friend in need. The family would like to express their thanks to the wonderful staff and volunteers at Haro Park Centre for their great kindness and care. If friends desire, donations in Wynnes memory may be made to the Alzheimers Society. Wynnes wish was to return to her roots in Winnipeg. A family service of remembrance will be held there at Brookside Cemetery at a later date. Messages to the family may be directed via bomalley@shaw.ca.
