LEAH SCHECHTER Leah Schechter passed away peacefully at Victoria General Hospital on Sunday, June 6, 2004 at the age of 91. Predeceased by her husband, Morris, of 46 years, she leaves to cherish her memory her children Menasche, Hinda and Israel (Sandy) grandchildren Aaron, Barbara (Robbie), Brent, Randi, Farrah and Stacey; brother Bernard (Estelle) sister Ida (Don) and beloved nieces and nephews. She and her husband, Morris, overcame great obstacles to survive the Holocaust. After the war, Leah and her husband along with their three small children came to Canada with hopes and dreams of starting a new and good life. It was important to her to instil a love of Judaism in her children and provide them with a good education. These hopes and dreams were fulfilled. Leah was an astute business woman in running a successful corner grocery store with her husband. Retiring after many years of hard work, Leah and Morris were able to enjoy trips to Hawaii and Israel. Leah was a strong Zionist, having come to Canada by way of Israel in the early 1950s. She supported several different charities in Israel, including the Hadassah Hospital, and a childrens orphans fund; as well as numerous charities in Winnipeg. Leah had a strong, independent and distinctive personality. She always left a lasting impression on people she met. She had a kind and generous heart. There were many people whom she helped out in her own quiet way. Her family is left with fond and vivid memories. She will be greatly missed. The family expresses sincere thanks to the nurses and staff of Tuxedo Villa Nursing Home for all their care and kindness shown to Leah. Also a special thanks is extended to the nurses at Victoria General Hospital 5th floor South for ensuring her comfort and care. Graveside service at Shaarey Zedek Cemetery took place on June 8, 2004. Donations in Leahs memory may be made to a charity of your choice.
