KATHERINE (KAE) BIRNIE (ELLIOTT) Suddenly, on May 3, 2004, Katherine Birnie, aged 78, formerly of Winnipeg, passed away in Creston, B.C. Kae is survived by daughter Anne Cote (David), Winnipeg; son Leslie Elliott, Calgary; grandchildren, Suzanne Quadling (Ed), St. Albert; Kevin, Steven and Deanne Cote of Winnipeg; great-granddaughter Jennifer Quadling; sisters, Pauline Rohatynski, Toronto; Jeanne Joy, Belleville; Helen Monaghan (Doug) Edmonton; Olga Deman, Anastasia Jurens and Tina Nichols of Winnipeg and many nieces and nephews. The daughter of Maria and Clemens Rohatynski, Kae grew up near Morden, M.B. After her marriage to Russell Elliott she lived in Ontario and France before returning to Winnipeg where she ran a coffee shop on Selkirk Ave. in what was then called Normans Pharmacy. Kae moved to Elkford, B.C. in 1977 after marrying Jack Birnie, then retired in Creston where she became well known for her skill and enthusiasm in the local 5-pin bowling league. Kae was predeceased by husband Russell in 1965 and Jack in 1995; brother Rifleman Walter Rohatynski 1944; sister Anne Bychuk and nephew William Bychuk. Memorial services were held at the Royal Canadian Legion #29 in Creston where Kae was an active member and Poppy Fund chairperson. A private family memorial service was held later in Winnipeg.
