ELIZABETH TOEWS Peacefully on July 12, 2004 at Bethania Personal Care Home, Elizabeth Toews of Winnipeg passed away at the age of 101 years. She is survived by daughter Lydia (Walter) Penner; three granddaughters, Rhonda (Darren) Reid of Crossfield, AB, Sylvia (John) Froese of Winnipeg and Linda (Daniel) Siemens of Olathe, KS; two great-grandchildren, Garrett and Nicholas Froese. She was predeceased by her husband Jacob in 1982; two brothers, Abe and John Friesen; two sisters, Katharina Epp and Mary Warkentin. Elizabeth was born on June 29, 1903 in South Russia. She attended the girls school in Chortiza and graduated from the Zentralschule (high school). On October 1928 she married Jacob Heinrich Toews in South Russia. On August 29, 1932 her daughter Lydia was born. In 1943 during the Second World War, they refugeed through Poland to Germany. In 1951 they immigrated to Winnipeg. She was a member of the First Mennonite Church for 53 years. She did a lot of sewing and was a dressmaker in Russia, Germany and Canada. "In my long life God gave me a lot of grace. I thank him for that." Special thanks to Dr. Doermer and the staff of Bethania for their gentle and excellent care. Thank you also to Revs. Hermann Dueck, Gerhard Friesen and Franz Wiebe for all their visits. Funeral service will be held on Friday, July 16 at 10:30 a.m. at First Mennonite Church, Notre Dame and Alverstone with interment at Brookside Cemetery. Viewing on Thursday, July 15 at 7:00 p.m. at Bethania Personal Care Home, 1045 Concordia Ave. and at the church prior to the service.
