FRED ANDERSON Peacefully on Sunday, July 18, 2004, Fred Anderson, aged 71 years, passed away at his cottage on Black Sturgeon Lake, ON. Fred is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Helen and their 5 children, Susan (Michel Gregoire), Carol (Bob Legge), Ray (Janice) Anderson, Neil (Lisa) Anderson and Laura (Dave Zimmerman). He will be sadly missed by his 14 grandchildren, Emilie, Lea and Isabelle Anderson-Gregoire, Dan, Marni, Jillian and Kevin Legge, Jennifer and Kyle Anderson, Josh, Lindsay and Julia Anderson, and Keiran and Ayla Zimmerman. His sister Avis (Stanley) McPherson also survives him. He was pre-deceased by his parents Ray and Dorothea Anderson. Fred attended Kelvin High School and went on to the U of M where he received his Chartered Accountants Degree in 1957. He joined the Manitoba Health Services Commission in 1960, where he held many positions, retiring as the Assistant Deputy Minister of Finance for Health in 1993. Fred volunteered on numerous boards including the Canadian Blood Committee, the Deer Lodge Centre Foundation and the Winnipeg RH Institute Foundation. Fred was devoted to his beloved wife Helen, whom he met 53 years ago, and rarely left her side. He was a gentleman and a gentle man who loved his family most of all. Fred was involved for many years at the Crestview Community Club, serving on the original Building Committee, as coordinator of the Family Fun Days and coaching his sons hockey and daughters softball teams. Fred was an avid duck hunter and fisherman in his youth., and he maintained a love of wildlife and nature. He also loved to play cards with friends and family, excelling at Contract Bridge. Fred was a man of great integrity, honesty and kindness, which was observed whether it be at the card table or the family dinner table. As the consummate host, he always made sure the comfort of family, neighbours and friends was looked after. Freds greatest joy came from either hosting friends at his cabin or knowing his cabin was being enjoyed by his childrens friends. Despite the past few years of health challenges, Fred maintained his dignity and tremendous grace. His final week found him hosting friends at his beloved cottage. Although he could no longer captain his boat, he once again provided friends with a beautiful summer week. A celebration of Freds life will take place Friday, July 23 at 1:30 p.m. in Westwood Community Church, 401 Westwood Dr. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Canadian Diabetes Association, or a charity of ones choice.
