Joe leaves us to join his beloved daughter Patricia; his parents, Camille and Sara (Riel) brothers, Roger and his wife Jeanne, Ted, Louis, Camille; sisters, Eleanor and Pauline and her husband Georges Chabot; brothers-in-law, John de Jong and Bill Schick and sister-in-law Donna. Joe was a loved and loving father, grandfather and friend. His memory will be cherished by his beloved long time companion, Rita Lacombe; his children, Dan (Brenda Kustra), Mike (Sandy Ellis), Jean (Ed Henderson) and John (Irene Hanuta) his six adored grandchildren, Samantha, Carly, Danielle, Quinn, Matthew and Ryann; his brother Ed and sisters, Fran de Jong, Marie and her husband Gus Thorimbert and Yolande Schick; sisters-in-law, Elizabeth, Eveline and many cousins, nephews, nieces and friends. A great-nephew of Louis Riel, Joe was born at home in St. Vital on March 7, 1925, the eighth of 11 children. At age 15, with the outbreak of the Second World War and anxious to serve his country, Joe joined the Royal Winnipeg Rifles, the famed "Little Black Devils", under an "assumed age". During the war he served in several countries in Europe and returned home in 1945. He recently passed on his war medals to his delighted grandson Matthew. Joe lived his entire life in the St. Vital and St. Boniface areas of Winnipeg and after the war worked for several companies in sales, and for the federal and provincial governments. He was active for many years in politics and remained a keen political observer until the end. Since retirement and until recently, one of Joes primary passions was tending his huge garden near Ile des Chenes. For many years and up until last week, Joe also enjoyed hoisting a "cold one" with his many friends at "The Dak". A funeral mass will be held at 2:30 p.m., Friday, July 23 at St. Timothys Roman Catholic Church, 135 John Forsyth Rd. off Warde, in River Park South, St. Vital, with Fr. Gerry Ward officiating. Interment of his cremated remains will take place at a later date at Green Acres Memorial Gardens. The family would like to express special thanks to the Winnipeg Fire and Paramedic Services, especially Peter, as well as to the hardworking staff at Victoria General Hospitals ICU who worked so hard and took such good care of Joe in his suffering especially near the end.
