PETER MADSEN 1905 - 2004 "And a book of remembrance began to be written up before him for those in fear of Jehovah and for those thinking upon his name." Malachi 3:16 Passed away peacefully at home in Lethbridge on July 19, 2004 at the age of 99 years, Neils Peter Gronning Madsen, beloved husband of the late Elna Kristense "Stense", who predeceased him on June 4, 1989. Peter was born in Vilsted, Jylland, Denmark on January 21, 1905. In 1923, Peter immigrated to Canada with a group of young Danes who wished to make a new life for themselves. A young lady, Elna "Stense" Sluth, who later became Peters wife, was travelling with her brother Martin as one of the group. Peter and Stense were married in Swift Current, SK on December 20, 1925. Together they raised their family of four sons and three daughters, enjoying the simple pleasures of family life. They farmed in the Silver Park, SK area for 15 years, then moved to Swan River, MB district. In 1975, the year of their 50th wedding anniversary, they retired to Lethbridge. Besides travelling and making several trips to Denmark with his wife and children, Peter enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, biking, gardening, playing horseshoes and putting. Peter is survived by his three sons, Ejner (Ida) of Calgary, Maurice (Anna) of Lethbridge and John (Sylvia) of Rosedale, AB; three daughters, Mildred (Harry) Cox of Lethbridge, Kris of Winnipeg, MB and Marilyn (Tom) Law from Whitehorse, YK; daughter-in-law Jacquie of Winfield, BC; 16 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Martha (Johannes) Larsen and many relatives in Denmark; and his nephew Soren Sigvardsen in Oosoyos, BC, who came from Denmark to make his home with his Aunt Stense and Uncle Peter in 1949. Peter was predeceased by his second eldest son Neil from Kelowna BC; his parents Neils Christian and Gjertrud Marie Madsen; and three sisters, Elna, Marie and Matilde of Denmark. Cremation. A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 P.M., on Saturday, July 24, 2004, at MARTIN BROS. RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, 610 - 4 St. S., Lethbridge, AB, with Mr. Gilbert Ernst officiating.
