WLADYSLAW "WALTER" NAKIELNY, M.D. We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our much loved husband, father, grandfather and friend Dr. Walter Nakielny on July 28, 2004, at Selkirk General Hospital after a lengthy illness. Walter is survived by his wife Sylvia, son John, daughters, Broni Anderson and Jadwiga Byrne, sons-in-law, Dan Anderson and Sean Byrne, and grandchildren, David and Shannon Anderson and Nicholas and Peter Byrne. Walter was born in Ostrava, CSSR September 1, 1922. On September 1, 1939 he volunteered for the Polish Army and fought in France. He studied Medicine in Switzerland, and there met and married his wife Sylvia. In 1951 the family immigrated to Canada. Walter practiced family medicine in rural Manitoba. He studied psychiatry and practiced at the Selkirk Mental Hospital from 1964 until his retirement in 1995. Walter had many interests: he loved music, playing his violins and singing with the Polish Sokal Choir, and performing with the hospital band. He loved nature, snowshoing, kayaking and fishing. He spoke many languages and was greatly fond of aboriginal culture. Walter loved the company of his family and many friends. He cared immensely for people, and lived his life in a humble and unpretentious manner. We all loved his wonderful sense of humour, and his generous and compassionate spirit.
