VANIRA (MICKEY) MacARTHUR Vanira (Mickey) MacArthur passed away on Wednesday July 28, 2004 in the Victoria General Hospital with her family by her side. A resident of Winnipeg since mid-1944 she was born in Thunder Bay (then Port Arthur). She was employed for a number of years as a seed analyst, first with Federal Grain Ltd. and then with Manitoba Pool Elevators until early retirement in April, 1983. A longtime member, and former president of the Manitoba Branch, Canadian Authors Association, she engaged in creative writing, having been awarded first prize in the Lady Eaton short story competition and having sold a number of works to Canadian publications and the CBC. She was also a member of the Manitoba Historical Society and the Heritage Canada Foundation, and was a supporter of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Winnipeg Ballet and the Manitoba Opera Company. A descendant of the United Empire Loyalist families and of the pioneer residents of Port Arthur, George and Margaret Morehouse and Thomas and Sarah Ann MacArthur, she was predeceased by her parents, Nina and Lemuel MacArthur and beloved sisters, Shirley Vigars and Orial Hickinbottom. She is survived by seven nieces and two nephews and many great and great-grandnieces and nephews in Canada and the United States, by godchild Freya Sonenstein in Washington, DC and also close friends in Winnipeg, Connecticut and Toronto. Memorial service will take place on Tuesday August 3 at 7:00 p.m. in Thomson "In The Park" Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Blvd. If friends so desire donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, 200 - 6 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB R3L 0K6, or CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, MB R2V 0B3.
