VILIS ANSONS Suddenly, on the morning of Friday, August 6, 2004 Vilis Ansons passed away while doing what he loved - playing tennis at Victoria Beach. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 25 years and best friend Peggy; daughters, Tamara and Stacy; and his furry friend Lucky. He will also be missed by his sons, Harald and Alan and their families. Born in Riga, Latvia on January 24, 1926 Vilis received his Registered Psychiatric Nursing Degree in 1953 in England. In 1956 Vilis moved to Canada to work at the Selkirk Mental Hospital. Following this, he worked at Stony Mountain Penitentiary for 27 years and then at Tuxedo Villa before retiring in 1998. Vilis loved all sports and his competitive nature was evident both as a participant and as a spectator. He was especially fond of playing tennis, badminton, and chess. Vilis was proud to be a National Umpire for badminton. He was a dedicated father who spent many hours watching his daughters play various sports and even kept personal stats at their volleyball and basketball games. Vilis also loved to travel, and was thrilled to attend Wimbledon with Peggy in 1979 and especially proud to return with his family to his homeland Latvia in 1997. The family is eternally grateful for the quick response and noble efforts from the fellow tennis players, the Victoria Beach community, and the Victoria Beach and Pine Falls medical staff. Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 10 at Westworth United Church, 1750 Grosvenor with burial service to follow at the Victoria Beach Cemetery on Thursday, August 12 at 11:00 a.m. Memorial tributes can be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society, the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, or the Victoria Beach Tennis Club, in care of 201 Waverley St., R3M 3K4.
