SIDNEY STERN February 28, 1920 - August 23, 2004 It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Sidney is predeceased by his parents, Eichel and Rifka; by his brothers, Morris and Louis and by his sisters, Ann Schnoor, Sarah Satran and Besse Gilschag. Sidney is survived by his devoted wife Hilda of 62 years and by his children, Ricki Segal (Harold), Carole Gutkin (Terry) and Marvin Stern (Sherri) by his grandchildren, Marshall Lerner (fiancee Kathe), Brenlee Stafford (Rod), Michael Lerner (Amanda), Shaun Gutkin (fiancee Kathy), Meghan Gutkin, Micah and Max Stern and by his great-grandchildren, Syrai, Mahala, Maquire, Emily, Jacob and Angelica and by many close friends and family. Sid devoted his life to raising and supporting his family which was his first priority and who received his unconditional love. Before permanently entering the workforce he served his country during the Second World War in the Canadian Armed Services. When the war ended, he took up a career in the food industry which continued until his retirement. Sids unique qualities as a caring and giving human being left his many customers counting him as a close friend. These qualities touched everyone who Sid came in contact with. A deeply religious man, he made the moral precepts of Judaism part of his everyday life. During his retirement years he especially enjoyed playing baseball, working out at the Rady Centre and spending time with his many friends and family. Sids passing leaves a deep ache in the hearts of all who loved him. He will live forever in the memory of all who were fortunate to have known him. Funeral services were held at the Congregation Etz Chaim Synagogue on August 23 with interment at the Hebrew Sick Cemetery. Pallbearers were Marshall Lerner, Michael Lerner, Shaun Gutkin, Michael Lazar, Gary Lazar and Jeff Schnoor. Honorary pallbearers were Alan Selig, Eric Swirsky, Joe Mindell, Jack Gutkin and Toby Schnoor. As an expression of sympathy, donations may be made to The Hilda and Sid Stern Fund c/o The Jewish Foundation of Manitoba or to Naamat.
