HELEN MIKALKO Peacefully at home in her residence at The Portsmouth, Helen Mikalko passed away on August 22, 2004. She is lovingly remembered by her many friends and family members, who will dearly miss her quick wit, her spirit, her kindness and her compassion. Helen was predeceased by her parents and her seven sisters and her brother, and is survived by many nieces and nephews. Helen was born on November 16, 1905, and was raised in Mikado, SK. She later moved to Regina and from there, went to Toronto in the late 1930s where she became involved in efforts for the Second World War. After the war, she became employed in the fur industry, first in Toronto and later in San Diego, CA. In 1988, Helen relocated to Canada, settling in Winnipeg where she became reacquainted with her family, and where she quickly made many friends in her residence on Boulton Bay. She brought to family gatherings many stories of her youth, and through the sharing of her memories, (almost a century of them), and her many cherished photographs, she gave her familys younger generation a greater sense and understanding of their own heritage. "Aunt Helen" was truly admired and respected by four generations of nieces and nephews who became her family. Many thanks to the staff at The Portsmouth for their kindness and compassion. Graveside service will be held on Friday, August 27 at 10:00 a.m. at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens, 4000 Portage Ave. Reception will follow at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home. Flowers are gratefully declined. If so desired, donations may be made in Helens memory to the Winnipeg Humane Society, 5 Kent St., Winnipeg, MB R2L 1X3 or to the CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9.
