She was predeceased by her mother Helen (nee Block) in 1950 and her father Waldemar Chalyj in 1964. Frieda was born in Memrik, Ukraine in 1941. Her family fled to Germany in 1943, and came to Rosemary, AB in 1949. In 1950 her mother Helen died of cancer and her father moved to Ontario to seek employment. She then enrolled in Bethel College, Newton, KS, where she financed her studies by working as college nurse. In 1967 she married Alex in London, England, where Alex was studying, and shortly after, they moved to Winnipeg. Once her children were in school, Frieda enrolled in part time studies at the University of Manitoba and received her BA in 1989. Frieda worked for several years in the Accounts Payable office at the U of M and at CIBC. Frieda provided much love and support to her family, and took an active and keen interest in the education of her children. She ushered at several Winnipeg theatres, and enjoyed Winnipeg cultural events, CBC radio, and Symphony concerts.
