BERTHA MADDEN (nee BOURASSA) Bertha Madden died suddenly on Tuesday, August 24, 2004 from heart complications at her home in St. Francois Xavier. Bertha was born July 11, 1938, the eldest of five children born to Romeo and Simone Bourassa of Sherbrooke, PQ. Bertha qualified as a Registered Nurse from Sherbrooke Hospital in 1957; as a Flight Nurse with the RCAF in 1959 and as an Operating Room nurse in 1964 from Vancouver General Hospital. She served as a Nursing Sister with the RCAF for seven years and while with them, was involved in Medivac - Emergency Medical Work out of Edmonton. Just prior to leaving the RCAF, she served as an OR nurse at the Military Hospital in Ottawa, where she met and married her husband Dave Madden. Bertha moved to Winnipeg with her family in 1967 and continued to work within the medical system of Manitoba. She worked short periods at Oakview Manor and at Deer Lodge Hospital and her primary work was in the Emergency Wards of Grace Hospital and, especially, the Health Science Center from where she retired in 1994. After retiring she delighted in her RN position in the medical unit of Headingly Correctional Institute. Bertha enjoyed her work as a nurse and at the time of her death she was employed in term position at Grace Hospital and Deer Lodge Hospital. Bertha is survived by her husband Dave Madden; her two sons and their families, Dave, wife Deneen, Jaren and Ryler of Ile des Chenes, MB and Jean Pierre, wife Aileen, Caitlin and Julia Madden of Manchester, England and her four siblings, Richard, Claudette, William and Maxim and their families of Sherbrooke, PQ. Funeral liturgy for Bertha, presided by Msgr. Maurice Commeault, will be at Blessed John XXIII Parish (Assiniboia Christian Center - 3390 Portage Ave.) on Monday, August 30 at 2:30 p.m. Her remains will be cremated and her ashes will be buried in the Catholic Cemeteries on West Portage (Assumption).
