HELEN PHILLIP In the early hours of August 28, 2004, our beloved mother, Helen Phillip, passed away at the Concordia General Hospital, at the age of 90 years. Helen will be sadly missed by her son and daughter-in-law, Bob and Mona Phillip of Winnipeg; daughter Barbara Gail Leblanc and grandson John Leblanc of Edmonton, AB. She was predeceased by her parents, Nikola and Barbara Noga; stepfather Hnat Yuristy; husband Walter; son-in-law Victor; brothers, John, Peter and Bill; and sisters, Annie, Nellie, Elsie and Rose. Helen was born in Ethelbert on February 8, 1914. She began her working life in Dauphin as a housekeeper. With the encouragement of her brother Bill, Helen moved to Winnipeg and took up hairdressing. After graduating, she worked with Bill in his shop in Elmwood until his departure to California and then with her younger sister Rose. Helen went on to operate her own salon from the family home until her retirement in 1979. It was in Winnipeg that Helen met and married her beloved husband Walter. They were married in 1940 and moved to Victoria, BC upon his enlistment in the Royal Canadian Navy in 1943. After the war, they settled in Winnipeg eventually moving to Transcona in 1956 where they enjoyed many happy years together. Helen loved her home and was very proud of her yard and garden. She spent many hours in her kitchen making pickles, jams and jellies. Helen also was very accomplished at sewing, needlework and crafts. Her love for animals was unbounded and all of the family pets enjoyed her kind and tender care. The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to the staff and tenants at Fred Douglas Heritage House for their care and support over the last three years and to all of the staff at the Concordia Hospital for their gentle care over the last few months. Your many kind deeds, words and gestures were so very appreciated and will not be forgotten. Funeral services will be held at Transcona Funeral Chapel, 1800 Day Street at 11:00 a.m. on September 1. In lieu of flowers, should friends so desire, memorial donations made be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society, the Fred Douglas Society or the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba.
