Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryMICHAEL BORODEY On Monday, August 30, 2004 at the Gimli Community Health Centre, Michael Borodey died as he lived, simply and peacefully. He leaves to mourn his wife of 54 years, Eleanor; son Bruce (Marilyn) and their children, Ryan (Gail and Erica), Jennifer Walker (Kurt) and Shane; son Gordon, daughters, Miranda and Camille and their mother, Diane Kaelin; and daughter Karen Hargreaves (Bruce) and their children, Natasha (Jared), David and Dillan. He was predeceased by his parents, Lukas and Palana; sisters Olga, Tatania, Malacha; brothers, Alexander, Paul and Marko. Michael was born in Brest-Litovska, Russia on November 6, 1924. He emigrated from Russia with his parents Lukas and Palana, brothers Marko, Paul and their families in 1937. He was a very proud Canadian but never forgot his roots, culture and nationality. He was particularly proud of his grandchildrens (Ryan, Jenny, Kurt and Shane) strong interest and talent in Ukrainian dancing and especially loved to take in every event the Barvinok Dancers performed at. As a very young man, Mike did some commercial fishing in Lake Winnipeg. He then went to Flin Flon where he worked in the mines. Returning to the Foley area where he met Eleanor Hrankowski in Winnipeg Beach. They married June 3, 1950. Mike and Eleanor returned to Foley where he farmed with his father. While farming, he also worked at the Winnipeg Beach and Gimli Hotel. Moving to Gimli in 1959, Mike worked at the Gimli Hotel, where he was not only the manager, but also a true friend to all the patrons who visited him there. Many of the people he met returned and became good friends because of his outgoing personality. He retired, following major surgery in 2001 at the age of 75 and enjoyed five years of retirement before his passing. Mikes hobbies included golfing, curling, and one of his favourites that he continued to do at the age of 70, hunting. Over the years Mike and Eleanor enjoyed travelling together, he especially enjoyed his trips to Seattle to visit his son Gordon, his family and friends, and most recently his trip to Alaska. Mike touched the hearts of all his close friends and always put the needs of his family first, especially his grandchildren, who were his bright stars in his full and long life. His family, and all his close friends will dearly miss him. While he had many interests, his devotion to his family was first and foremost. This instilled strong family values and ties that will always endure even though he is no longer with us. Pallbearers are Jack Clarkson, Mike Penziwol, Mike Woychyshyn, Ted Hykawy, Brian Borody, and Nick Borodey. Honorary pallbearers are Mikes grandchildren and his close and dear friends who are too many to mention. Prayers will be held Friday, September 3 at St. Michaels Roman Catholic Church in Gimli at 7:00 p.m., followed by the funeral mass at St. Michaels Church on Saturday, September 4 at 10:30 a.m. with Fr.
