LEONARD GEORGE BUDD Peacefully, with his family by his side, Leonard passed away at Boyne Lodge in Carman on September 4, 2004. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Marjorie; eldest son Arthur (Valerie) of Carman; son Douglas (Norine) of Ottawa; grandchildren, Patricia in Kelowna, Gerald (Shelly) in Calgary, Jennifer McArthur (Russel) in Dauphin, Christine and Angela of Ottawa and six great-grandchildren. Len was born in Gosport, England on November 8, 1911. After his parents passed away, Len and his older brother Arthur came to Canada in 1925 where they lived with an aunt and uncle, Hubert and Louise Budd, on a farm near Minnedosa. After graduation from school, he obtained his teaching certificate from Brandon Normal School. It was difficult to find work in the 1930s, so rather than teach, he worked as a logger in the Gods Lake area. He then ventured to Churchill where he worked unloading and loading ships. The town of Churchill decided to open a school, and in 1935, Len became the first school teacher in Churchill. After a year of teaching, he started a lumber business, which became his lifelong career. He and Marjorie were married in Churchill in 1938. Career moves in the lumber business included Flin Flon, Venn, Zelma and Milden in Saskatchewan and in Hamiota, Winnipeg and finally in 1964 they moved to Carman. Here he managed the Co-op lumberyard for 12 years after which he retired. Len designed many homes in the Carman area and was the local building inspector after he retired. He was a strong supporter of the Anglican Church, was involved in the Dufferin Horticulture Society, the Dufferin Museum, helped build the Lawn Bowling Green and was voted the Citizen of the Year. The family wishes to extend its deepest appreciation to the staff at Boyne Lodge, especially the second floor nursing staff, for the kind care given our father. Funeral service will be held at Grace St. Johns Church in Carman, MB on Wednesday, September 8 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Brad Elliott officiating. Interment to follow in the Greenwood Cemetery. Donations may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association, 102-310 Broadway, Winnipeg, MB R3C 0S6; The Heart and Stroke Foundation, 6 Donald St., Suite 200, Winnipeg, MB R3L 0K6; or a charity of ones choice. Doyles of Carman in care of arrangements. www.doyleschapels.com
