John attended Cecil Rhodes School and Daniel Mac Collegiate. At 19 years of age he went up to Flin Flon in 1930 to work for Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting. He stayed there for 27 years working his way up to the Research Department. He married Helen Patricia Rindress on March 27, 1935 in Northminster United Church. 50 years later they renewed their vows in Killarney United Church. John was made Recreation Director in Flin Flon. He coached a Ladies basketball team, started gymnastics at the Grayling Canoe Club. Dad joined the Fort Gary Horse Reserve Army Corp and trained at Shilo. Church was always an important part of Dads life from Sparling United Church in Winnipeg where he grew up to Northminster United in Flin Flon. He taught a Tuxis Boys Group and later taught Sunday School, was on the Management and Finance Board and belonged to Killarney United Church. In Winnipeg he belonged to St. James and of late Crescent Fort Rouge United. In 1957 he and his wife moved to Gunnar Mines, SK, a Uranium mine on Lake Athabaska. After four years, when the mine was closing down, they went to Nicaragua, CA, Columbia, SA, Bathurst, NB, and Honduras, CA, where he worked for Rosario Resources. In 1975 Dad gave a presentation to the American Mining and Metallurgist Society in New York. This was the highlight of his mining career. Rosario Resources opened an office in Toronto where he was Consulting Metallurgist for all Rosario properties. They retired to Killarney with their granddaughter Pattie, whom they had raised. After 14 years in Killarney they moved to the Eastern Star Chalet in Winnipeg. Dad received his Masonic Pin for 50 years and was also a Past Worthy Patron of the OES. His many special friends, Bob Reninger, Ken Coyne, Marion and Jim Powers, Joan and Julie Cormay, Roseanne and Paul Goertzen, his many mining friends, the Pelachaty family and numerous other caregivers who meant so much to him. At the age of 87, Dad wrote a book about his life and his many travels with the help of Marion Powers. He learned to use a computer and took a University course on Anthropology. With the proceeds of his book he donated a large screen TV to the Eastern Star Chalet. He had an excellent memory up to the time of his death.
