NIELS BECK JORGENSEN Born in Hedensted, Denmark on December 31, 1906, Beck passed away on September 2, 2004 at Peace Arch Hospital in White Rock, BC. He leaves behind Elsie, his wife of 66 years; a sister Inger Bak; his children, Miriam (Joe), June, Norman (Janette), and Patricia; as well as his grandchildren, Alana, Anthony, Tiffany, Erik, Hilary and Andrew, all of whom were his pride and joy. Beck was a self-made man, having only four years of formal education, but a lifetime of reading and learning. He left Denmark at the age of 19 to emigrate to Canada to start a new life. From having no money and speaking no English, he worked hard to eventually own his own company, Alpha Manufacturing, in Winnipeg. He and Elsie raised their family in Winnipeg and then moved to Surrey, BC to escape the cold and the mosquitoes. He ultimately settled in White Rock, with frequent side trips to Reno for "Keno" therapy. He was fiercely independent, playing the stock market and smoking his cigars until the end. A memorial service will be held at Victory Memorial Park, 14831 28th Ave., Surrey, on Saturday, Sept. 11 at 11:00 a.m., with interment and reception to follow.
