Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryEUGENE JOHN HLUSCHAK (1950 - 2004) The death of Eugene "Gene" John Hluschak occurred on Monday, September 6, 2004 in the Ottawa Hospital-Civic Campus. Eugene was a native of Winnipeg and a recent resident of Carleton Place, ON. He leaves to mourn his passing, his loving life partner of 26 years, Cynthia Cameron, his family and his many friends. Eugene was a graduate of the University of Manitoba in History and continued graduate studies in Anthropology. After an initial career in corrections and social work, in later years, Eugene devoted his energy and talent to business, travel and creative writing. Over the past several years, he was engaged in business plan and web site development. His extensive travels throughout South East Asia, North Korea, West Africa, Cuba, Europe, the United Kingdom and the United States formed the basis for numerous articles in travel publications. Perhaps his greatest pleasure came from the hours spent in writing short stories, and plays, and working on his first novel. He drew substance for his writing from formative years spent in the north end of Winnipeg and his later world travels. Eugene faced the last months of his life with great courage and determination to live out his life on his own terms. His remarkable curiosity and need to be informed led him to read widely and constantly; a pattern which continued up to his final days. He will be lovingly remembered for his delight in good conversation sprinkled generously with ready humour and wonderful Winnipeg stories accompanied with typical "north end" accents. According to his wishes, cremation has taken place followed by a service to celebrate his life conducted by Rev. Blair Corcoran. A memorial service will be held in Winnipeg at a date and time to be announced.
