Joe was born in Dunfermline, Scotland and came to Canada as a young boy. He grew up in St. James, and attended the Salvation Army where he learned to play various musical instruments in their band. This talent carried on in later life to military bands, dance bands and the formation of the St. James Firefighters Drum and Bugle Band and the A.N.A.F. Drum and Bugle Band. Joe served with the Royal Winnipeg Rifles during the Second World War. During peacetime he was Regimental Sgt. Major with the Winnipeg Grenadiers, and later with the Fort Garry Horse Artillery. His career began with the St. James Fire Department, which later became the Winnipeg Fire Department, and he proudly retired as Deputy Chief of the Fire Prevention Branch in January 1987. Joe spent most of his life in St. James and was a lifetime member of the Army, Navy, Air Force Unit 283, serving on the Executive Council first as President and then as Honorary President for the past several years. He was also very active in charity work, including time spent on the Board of Directors at Deer Lodge Centre. Dad started playing Santa Claus when his girls were small, for Salvation Army Sunday School Christmas parties and it became a lifelong endeavour, with generations of children sitting on his knee, telling him their wishes. He played Santa at the St. James Legion, the A.N.A.F., Brownies, Cubs, Grace Hospital, nursing homes, schools and community clubs. Joe is survived by and will be missed greatly by his loving wife of 60 years Gwen; his four daughters, Jo-Anne (Ron) Schenkers, Wendy (Larry) Watson, Judy (Jim) Boyce and Cathy (Keith) Jackson. He will also be missed by his brother-in-law Frank Spooner and niece Dorothy (Ches) Carver.
