ELLEN (JOHNSTON) COLLIER February 16, 1912 - September 17, 2004 Peacefully, with her stepdaughter by her side, our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother passed away at the age of 92 years. Ellen was predeceased by husband Robert in (1969) stepdaughter Aileen; stepsons, Frank and Les; sister Valeda Paulin; and brother Jim Johnston. She will be lovingly remembered by stepdaughter Lois Bergman of Seattle; grandchildren, David Collier (Chantal) of Montreal, Jeffrey Collier (Barbara) of Vancouver, Jenny Collier (Boyd) of Dusseldorf, Bruce Bergman (Joy) of San Diego; and great-grandchildren, Chloe, Sarah, Anne-Sophie, Cassandra Rose and Emily. Also left with fond memories are nephew Gary Paulin (Margaret) and dear family friends, Chris and Doug McAuley, Christine and Hamish Nicol and their families. Ellen will be deeply missed by her Winnipeg family, the Johnston "kids", nieces, Meryle (Bob), Kenda (Red) nephew Scott (Joy) great-nieces, Tina (Cam), Cali; and great-nephew Shea. Ellen was born in Wilmington, IL to Willie and Nellie Johnston. The family moved to Marquette, MB in 1920. She married Robert in 1938 and they moved to St. James. Ellen became a Canadian citizen in 1971. Ellen was very involved in the community through her longtime memberships in the St. James United Church, Sons of Scotland (Camps St. Andrews and Robert Burns) and the Eastern Star (St. James Chapter No. 25) where she recently received her 50-year pin. Ellen had a wide variety of interests from travelling to Bingo to the horse races. She was an avid bowler and won many trophies. The Blue Bombers and Blue Jays have lost one of their most devoted fans. She dearly loved the Johnston family get togethers for holidays and birthday celebrations and was always the first one to get us organized. Ellen spent many hours knitting and baking for family, friends and charities. She was known in St. James as "The Shortbread Lady". The family wishes to thank the staff of the 5th Floor at the Grace Hospital, especially, Katie, Karlie, Shannon and the Prince of a gentleman, Clem. Thanks also to Dr. Renouf for his care over the years. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 25 at 1:00 p.m. in the St. James United Church, 234 Parkview St. In lieu of flowers, if so desired, donations may be made to the St. James United Church Memorial Fund, 234 Parkview St., Winnipeg, MB R3J 1S3.
