MARY WYNNYK (nee SEDIK) On Saturday, September 18, 2004 our beloved mother and grandma passed away in the manner that she would have wanted, with her devoted daughter Helen by her side. Mary was born on December 7 and would have celebrated her 90th birthday this year. Mary is survived by her only child, beloved daughter Helen and her adored son-in-law Allan Wiess; grandchildren, Rick (Cheryl), Pete and Sandra (Kim Houde) great-granddaughters, Danielle, Amy and Kristine. Mary was born and raised in Selkirk, MB to parents, Jessie and Wasyl Sedik. She was predeceased by her brother John and sister Anne. She is survived by her sisters, Kay and Lena; brother Mike; and numerous nieces and nephews. She married her husband Jack in 1936 and they enjoyed 41 years of marriage until his death in 1977. She had worked as the head cook at the Selkirk Mental Hospital for many years. While living on Clandeboye Avenue, Marys home was meticulously maintained and envied by many with her manicured lawn, sculpted hedges, gorgeous flowers and carefully attended vegetables. Mom loved to be outside puttering around the yard. Her basement was filled with canned and pickled fruit and vegetables which she took so much pride in preparing. Mary was a very gracious and dignified woman who above all else put her family first in her life. She was more than a mother to daughter Helen, as they were the best of friends. The two of them spent countless hours baking, cooking, pickling, shopping and drinking coffee together. Their relationship was a testament to the bond between mothers and daughters. Her passing will leave an incredible void in Helens life who felt honoured and blessed to have had such an incredible woman for her mother. Our lives will never be the same without Mom/Grandma in them. There will now be an empty seat at the table without her there to pass the salt shaker to. We will no longer hear those lovely words "bless your heart" when you made her a cup of coffee. We will miss the birthday cards she always signed "Grandma Mary". Despite our loss, we are grateful to God for giving us such an extraordinary woman for all these years. We learned many great things from her, how to cook and garden, how to be patient, how to walk proud, how to mentor but not criticize, how to be a lady and how to love and respect the people in your life. Mom, not a day will go by when I will not think of you. I will always remember the strength, determination and dignity you displayed against the battle of your recent illness. I thank you for the many, many years we shared together and will miss you more than I could ever express. Your spirit will live on through our family as I see certain of your qualities in your grandchildren and myself. Thank you Mom for your love, support and guidance, may you rest in peace. Helen Grandma, you were my inspiration, my hero, my friend. Sandra Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, September 21 at 11:00 a.m. in the Holy Eucharist Ukrainian Catholic Church in Selkirk with Parish Clergy officiating. Interment to follow in the East Selkirk Cemetery. Sincere thanks to the fabulous nurses at the Selkirk General Hospital who showed compassion and kindness to my Mom during her illness. Thanks to those who were there to help our family and care for my Mom. If friends so desire, donations in Marys memory can be made to CancerCare Manitoba, Room 1160-675 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, MB, R3E 0V9. Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk in care of arrangements.
