J. FRANK MUIRHEAD 1919 - 2004 Now is the time to say goodbye to a husband, father, grandpa, brother and friend. Peacefully at Riverview Health Centre, on Friday, September 17, Frank passed away. Born in Carberry, MB, Franks love of the land and his agricultural roots led him to the University of Manitoba to complete a B.S.A. in General Agriculture and eventually to Madison, Wisconsin, where he completed his M. Sc. in Extension Education and Administration. 42 years of dedicated work with the Department of Agriculture began in Holland, MB, where he met and married his wife of 57 years, Edith. His career provided him an opportunity to be involved in many areas of the department. Most memorable would be his work in 4-H, serving as Director of Agricultural Services, the development of the Keystone Centre in Brandon, the Austin Museum, Farm Land Protection and the many friends and colleagues he had an opportunity to meet and work with over the years. In 1977 Frank was the recipient of The Canadian Jubilee Silver Medal for meritorious service. Frank loved his work and he continued to maintain an avid interest in his field throughout his life. He also maintained an active interest in curling. This began as a young boy ice making at the local rink, led to him being part of the team representing Manitoba at the 1955 Brier, and continued at local clubs. For many years, Frank was involved in community service with Riverview United Church. In later years, he enjoyed travelling, going to the lake and trips home to Carberry. Dad was extremely proud of his family and grandchildren and followed their career choices with great interest. His stories of growing up on the family farm, visits to country fairs, and exploration of country roads passed on a lasting appreciation of rural Manitoba and a great respect for the hard work done there and for the people who do it. Frank is survived by his wife Edith (nee Dexter) daughter Marilyn Morrice (John) and granddaughter Hilary; daughter Joanne Macbeth (John) and grandson Bryan (Jenni) and granddaughter Ainslie; his sister Myrtle Little and nieces and nephews. 85 years of a life well lived have left us with many memories and for that we are grateful. A memorial gathering will be held at Thomson Funeral Home, 669 Broadway on Tuesday, September 21 at 4:00 p.m. Private family interment to take place earlier at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens. The family would like to thank the staff members of Lions Manor and Riverview Health Centre for the care they provided. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Franks honour to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, 6 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB R3L 0K6, or the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, 10-120 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB R3C 4G2 or to 4H Canada at: www.4-h-canada.com.
