ROBERT LATHAM JEFFREY Robert Latham Jeffrey, (actor, singer, producer) of heart failure, after a long illness with vascular disease, at his home in Toronto on Friday, September 17, 2004, with his partner Paul Russell, close friend Daniel Hill and his dog Dudley by his side. Born in Winnipeg on May 3, 1934, son of the late David Jeffrey and the late Nellie Latham. Brother of the late Donald Jeffrey and the late Martin Jeffrey. Robert was an accomplished musical entertainer with a career that included television, stage, cabaret and opera. He moved from Winnipeg to Toronto as a scholarship student of the Royal Conservatory of Music. He was a performer in CBC variety television, in Winnipeg, then Toronto; on stage at Stratford, Ontario ("HMS Pinafore", "Pirates of Penzance") and then Europe (Tony in "West Side Story"). Returning to Canada he took roles in the Canadian Opera Company (Louis Riel, Luck of Ginger Coffey), then musical revues ("Spring Thaw 68 & 70) . Then followed the Toronto and Boston productions of the cabaret musical "Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris" and tours to Ottawa, Montreal, Philadelphia, with a Brel Tribute performance in New York. Roberts later cabaret credits include "Flicks", "Moon and June and Honeymoon" and "Dames at Sea". He was a regular performer with Muskoka Summer Theatre and appeared often with the Sudbury Theatre Centre ("Oliver", "Charlie Brown", "Sound of Music", "Showboat"). In later years he was a founding member of the Paulus Film Group (PFG) and co-director of Reach For The Top Inc. with its television series "Reach For The Top" and Schoolreach subscription programme in schools across Canada. Robert is lovingly remembered by his sisters-in-law, Betty Jeffrey and Pat Jeffrey (Winnipeg) cousin Rae Anne Freeman and her husband Bill (Kingston) and Derek Gretsinger (Richmond, BC) nephews, Todd, Paul and Kevin Jeffrey and their wives, Pam, Colleen and Katrina; his niece Karen Jeffrey; and great-nephews, Robert and Christopher; and great-nieces, Samantha and Emma (Winnipeg). In Toronto he is cherished by his extended family, Paul Russell, Daniel Hill, and chosen son James Bailey, and his wife Tanya and daughter Violetta. Friends and family are invited for visitation at Morley Bedford Funeral Home, 159 Eglinton Ave. West (2 stoplights west of Yonge St.), Wednesday, September 22, 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.. A funeral mass will be held at the Church of St. Mary Magdalene, 477 Manning Ave., on Thursday, September 23, 1:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, remembrances can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, the Church of St. Mary Magdalene, and Hart House, University of Toronto.
