STELLA MARTEL After a three week hospital stay, Stella Martel passed away peacefully at Victoria General Hospital on Sunday, September 19, 2004. She showed strength, determination, courage and maintained her sense of humour and wit right until the end. Stella was predeceased by her parents, Victoria and Edmond Martel and her only brother Gabe. Stella is survived by her only sister Gladys (Larry) Feschuk and their three daughters, Kim (Bob) Kovalik, Bev (Larry) Swalm, Leslie (Steve) Hayward and all their children. Stella was born on March 3, 1923. She was born and raised and lived the majority of her life in Fort Garry. She had numerous jobs until joining the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1940. She served two tours of duties, her last being with the Military Police. Of great importance in Stellas life was the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 90 and her Legion family. Stella spent many hours with those people she considered her friends and family. Over the years, Stella served on numerous committees and Executive positions. Among those were being Treasurer for many committees and she organized many events. She proudly served as President of the Legion and continued as a member of the Past President Club. She was one of the founding members of The Half Century Club. For her years of dedicated service, Stella was awarded a Legion Life Membership and presented with Legionnaire of the Year. She participated in most of the available activities within the Legion, most notably bingo, dances, curling, bowling, shuffleboard and crib. She so enjoyed her time at the Legion that in her later work life she joined the work force of the Legion and worked there until her retirement. Stellas family wish to thank the Home Care team for all their assistance and care of Stella over the past few years. Without your help, Stella would not have been able to stay home and for that we are all grateful. We also wish to thank the doctors, nurses and health care aids for their care of Stella during her hospitalization. There will be an informal celebration of Stellas life at the place she so loved, The Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 90, 1125 Pembina Hwy. on Thursday, September 23 at 12:00 noon. Stella will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed. Voyage Funeral Home and Crematorium 1531 Pembina Hwy. 284-7500
