Stephen was born in Stuartburn, MB, on February 15, 1912, and received his education in Winnipeg. He was an excellent student, but in order to assist in supporting his parents and siblings, he was unable to attend university after completing high school. His exceptional scholastic ability enabled him to secure a position with the Government of Canada during the Great Depression. He joined what was then the Department of Customs and Immigration, where he rose through the ranks to a senior management position. He retired after 44 years of dedicated service for which he was recognized in Ottawa by the Prime Minister of Canada. Stephen was a talented musician and singer. In his youth, he played numerous stringed instruments in dance bands formed by his brothers and throughout his lifetime he had a passion for choral music. His beautiful tenor voice was heard in various choirs in the Ukrainian religious and cultural community, particularly the Ukrainian Male Chorus and the choir at the Ukrainian Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, where he was a founding member. Stephen was a kind and considerate man who was an inspiration to many with his upstanding character, strong family values, and positive outlook. He will be missed by all who knew him. Prayers will be sung Sunday, September 26 at 7:00 p.m. at the Ukrainian Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, 1175 Main St. Funeral service will take place Monday, September 27, at 11:00 a.m., also at the Cathedral, with Very Rev. H. Lakusta officiating. Interment will be at Glen Eden Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, if so desired, a donation may be made in Stephens memory to the Holy Trinity Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral or a charity of ones choice.
